Hi!

How do I set up the sonos arc in cieling speakers to make a surround sound in my living room? I plan on having 2 in the living room and was thinking about installing them behind the sofa? Any help would be appreciated.

Tbere isn't really any such thing as 'Arc in ceiling speakers'. But hopefully the links provided by @jgatie will show you what is actually possible.

But I can't also help but wonder if you have misunderstood what upward firing speakers are?

Assuming you mean using in-ceilng speakers as surrounds in conjunction with the Arc which provides left/center/right channels then here are your options:

  1. You’ll need a Sonos Amp to power the the two in-ceiling speakers. See Amp here
  2. You can select your own 3rd party speakers as long as they meet the specification listed here
  3. You can use Sonos In-Ceiling Architectural speakers by Sonance shown here
