Era 100 or 300 and speaker placement

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to decide between the Era 100s and Era 300s for my theater room to pair with a Arc Ultra and likely a sub under my sectional, was hoping to get some feedback on my setup.

As the attached image shows, the TV is across from the longer side of the sectional, and there are two windows directly behind the couch. The picture doesn’t really show it, but the windows are recessed about 10 inches. The black boxes behind the sectional on the window sill at ear level are where I’d ideally like to place the speakers.

My thought was to use the window sills since there’s enough room for either setup. The speakers would have roughly 2–4 inches of space behind them, about 10 inches on each side if I went with the Era 300s (and even more space with the Era 100s), plus plenty of room above them. The sill height lines up almost perfectly with ear level, and the sectional sits directly against the wall.

Given this layout, do you think the Era 100s or Era 300s would work better? One thing I’m trying to avoid is having the speakers feel too overpowering for anyone sitting right next to them. I’m also curious whether either model would have issues performing properly while sitting in a recessed window sill like this.

The image shows the room dimensions.

Would really appreciate any thoughts or experiences with a similar setup. Thanks!

Here is a photo to make more sense of it.

That picture really leans me towards inverted above the windows, what is the reason you aren't considering that?

Three feet in from the side walls should be excellent given my experiments with my 300 Pair. Or go for centered on the windows to balance the appearance.

The windows are tall enough they should be OK for height but look pretty narrow to get the side clearance you're going to want.

IMO you could wall mount  the speakers if you can find a stud or above the windows if there is header behind the wall board.

If your dwelling is an apartment I understand the reluctance to drill holes. That being the case I would seriously think about moving the sofa forward enough to force stands in place to mount the speakers using the same line as shown for wall mounting. Actually, as I look closer the speaker on the left would easily fit on a stand behind the table with the lamp.

Unfortunately IMO placing the speakers in the window sills would place then directly behind someone’s head….not good 😕

The above is all the advice I can offer. Hopefully you’ll figure out what works best for you 😊

The stud location issue can be solved with what is called a "fan mounting box" that goes in through a small hole and then expands to secure to the adjoining studs. Many are rated to hold a 50 pound fan so speakers are not an issue.

Appreciate the feedback. Will move forward with this for now, if they seem to be overbearing ill return and go with the 100s.

Appreciate the help!

OK… understood.

FYI, replacing the Era 300’s with Era 100’s only removes the Dolby Atmos affect. To really determine which is best I’d suggest (if possible) purchasing a pair of Era 100’s and do an A/B test with a Doiby Digital 5.1 source.

That should give you an idea as to how the Era 100’s sound (vs the Era 300’s) because that will be their constant audio reproduction for surround. Trying to compare a Dolby Atmos source Era 300 vs Era 100 will not provide the proper assessment in your case.

Of course return the pair you don’t want within the return window allowed. 😊

I'm not good at returns, I tend to find another room that needs a Sonos.

If I'm really pushed (spouse) and have no rooms available, well,  mom, the kids or grand kids might get a present of my oldest or smallest that has to be evicted.

It isn't so much deep pockets as prioritizing what I want.

I watch friends and family, better off for income than I am, that are struggling to make ends meet but don't blink at spending more than the cost of an Era-100 Pair on dinner out. I grilled a steak and potato, added a head of lettuce and oil/vinegar dressing and listened to my "extra" 300 Pair.

Given my Sonos have proven to be a 20 plus year investment the daily cost is pennies and going down. Only better investment so far was the quality tool set I bought back in High school, still going 60 years later.
