Hi guys,

my current setup is a 2016 Sony TV (xd49xd7005TV) +new AppleTV 4k (6gen): my TV has an ARC output, but no eARC. It supports up to Dolby Digital plus (no ATMOS).

I’m thinking to add to this setup a Sonos Beam (2nd gen).

I was just wondering how to connect the whole system. Should I connect Apple TV with my TV through HDMI and then my TV with the BEAM through ARC (using a regular HDMI cable)? Or should I do it some other way?

And what sound will get out of it? Will it be Atmos? Dolby digital? Or even less?

Thank you!

Hi

  1. Set up your AppleTV 4K to an open HDMI port and select that input when viewing AppleTV.
  2. Set-up Beam to HDMI-ARC using the included HDMI cable

As it appears the only Sonos speaker that will be used is the Beam-Gen2 (meaning no Sonos Sub or Surrounds) the sound to your ear will be closer to stereo for OTA and general Cable. However, you will get separation for Left Front/Center/Right Front when source material offers Dolby Digital 5.1; but the processing by the Beam-Gen2 will only be 3.2.0. The 3 being left front/center/right front, and the .2 being the reflected surround track via the side firing speakers. The .0 refers to the Sub which in your setup is not present. Dolby Atmos material will be adjusted in a similar manner as it requires an eARC connection.

I am looking to do a similar setup with the same gen AppleTV, but the TV is a Samsung MU6070  its does have HDMI-Arc also. Is there anyway to connect the AppleTV directly to the SONOS eARC for better sound with some type of HDMI combiner/splitter ? Meaning connect the AppleTV to a splitter via one input and then send separate HDMIs one to the TV for Video and one to the Beam for truer Atmos. In effect like a blue-player having dual HDMI outputs.

Consider getting the HDFury Arcana eARC adapter that allows the Apple TV to bypass your TV’s HDMI ARC limitations and send audio directly to the Beam (Gen 2). This will allow you to get Dolby Atmos and multichannel PCM audio from the Apple TV 4K to play through the Beam.
