Question

adding to a Play5

I have a Play5 in a 3x5m room and would like to add another speaker. Is the obvious choice another 5 or would that be overkill in a small room?

Thanks

Harder than average to find another PLAY:5, either gen 1 or gen 2, but I do have two gen 2s set up as stereo in my living room, they sound quite excellent. If I were ready to replace them, the current similar speaker from Sonos is a Sonos Five. Unfortunately, it can’t be stereo paired with a PLAY:5 of any generation, so in order to do so, I’d need to get two.

However, if you’re just grouping, rather than stereo pairing, any Sonos speaker running the same OS (S1 or S2) will work well, and a second PLAY:5 would be great as a ‘grouped’ speaker.

Used Play 5s of either generation are available at reasonable prices from well rated sellers.

At 3x5 you might consider a Pair of Era-100s as a start and if needed add mini-Sub. That would get you new gear and leave your current speaker to go to another room.

Apologies, I have the newer 5 and not the old Play5. Was on autopilot when I wrote as I used to have the Play.

Stereo would be the preferred result, would that have to be another 5?

thanks

In order to stereo pair, you’d need to get another Five, yes. Sonos has never made a 5.

I do not think the room is too small for a stereo pair of Play 5s. Properly using the volume control for your preferred listening levels is good practice.

While the Play 5 Gen 2 and the Five look very similar, the internal electronics are not the same. So in order for you to have a stereo pair like @Airgetlam has stated, you NEED two of the same model speakers.

Just to confirm, for stereo, it would have to be another 5 (same model as owned)?

Would pairing an Era 100 with my 5 not create stereo?

The requirements for setting up a stereo pair are shown on the Sonos website, if you’re unwilling to accept what’s been said in replies above.

For sound/timbre matching reasons, you can only stereo pair like models.
