🇬🇧 Well, someone has to start the first UK thread… 😄

Looks like I'm going to have to break the silence in here! 👋

First off, a big thank you to  @Keith N   and the Sonos team — not just for creating the UK group, but for reimagining the wider Sonos Community. 🙌

I really like the direction this is going. Over the years, a lot of the Sonos conversation has ended up spread across Reddit, Facebook groups and various other places. It would be great to have more of that discussion happening here, alongside the Sonos team and other owners. 🔊

I'm Carl, from Cheshire, and I've been using Sonos for a good few years. I've somehow ended up with rather more Sonos products around the house than I originally intended… funny how that happens! 😂

I'm interested in everything from home theatre and music to new products and generally seeing what Sonos is working on next.

Musically, I'm mostly into electronic music, EDM and melodic techno 🎶, but I also love film scores, classical and anything with great production that really shows off a system.

So, to the other UK members…

📍 Where in the UK are you from?
🔊 What does your Sonos system look like?
🎵 What sort of music are you into, and what have you been listening to lately?

Hopefully this becomes a nice little corner of the Community for UK owners to chat, share experiences and discover a few things along the way.

Anyway… tumbleweed officially removed. 🌵😂

Hello UK! 👋🇬🇧

Hey Carl,

I’m Sarah from Swindon in Wiltshire and bought my first Sonos product (Ben Gen 2) in 2022. Since then, I have also ended up with way more Sonos speakers than planned - they certainly are addictive I think 😄

Like you, I am always interested in what Sonos are working on although I have resisted the urge to upgrade my main HT set up which is the Beam Gen 2, Sonos One SLs and Sub mini. I do also have 2 other soundbars upstairs - Ray and a Playbase which are also just fine for their situations.

I have Sonos speakers in every room of my all be it, small house and use most of them a fair bit.

One of my favourite things I did was to replace a very aging HiFi set up with Sonos Fives and a new little CD player. Both the CD player and the Turntable I already had, are connected to each Five’s Line in. I love that set up and it’s even better now I own Ace Ultra and am able to stream to those headphones from time to time.

Music wise, I am into Rock, Folk, 60/70’s stuff and metal but also like other things. I just like what I like I guess. Lately though, I have been listening to a bit of Dolly Parton which is outside my normal genre of choice. I knew her famous stuff of course but discovered I really like most of her early stuff and have been enjoying listing to that.

Can you have too many Sonos speakers? 🤔 😆

Hi @SarahN - I love the Fives, I have a Stereo Pair with a Sub and they are still far the best speakers Sonos does in my opinion.

Agreed about the Fives and mine are also paired with a Sub Gen 3. Awesome set up for my turntable and CD player!

John here from Surrey, started with a Play 5 Gen 1 in 2015, now have 15 Sonos S2 devices.  How did that happen!

I survived the App update debacle of May 2024( Ifeel there should be a badge for this 😎) , but did occasionally throw my toys from the pram when that was going on.  The Sonos team of today are, thankfully, a completely different beast.  Listening and innovating again.  Although I’m still missing the Local Library Music Format info on play screen 😉.

One thing I appreciate with Sonos kit is how easy it is to sell old kit to upgrade, always get a decent price or can pass onto family members for continued use.

I have speakers in most rooms and two Moves for Garage/Garden.  My main listening room is an Arc Ultra, Sub2 and Era 300 surrounds.  Dolby atmos music is great and have started by Blueray Atmos music albums from SDE shop, it’s becoming an addiction🙄

I also have a Playbase!  Which is surprisingly good and along with its connected Symfonisk Surrounds, is the oldest kit on the system.

I am old school and still buy CDs, which I rip as FLAC to a NAS drive using Exact Audio Copy.  I do have Amazon music too but that will go when I retire!

Music taste generally Rock, with a slant for Progressive.  My favourite band is the Dan Reed Network, a funk rock band from the early 90s.

Nice decor in this room too.

Hi John, great to see another local music library user! 😄 I’ve got a fairly sizeable library of FLAC and ALAC too, and I’m also a big fan of Dolby Atmos music.

I’m interested in your Blu-ray Atmos collection. I have a 4K Blu-ray player but so far only have Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon and the new Beatles – Rubber Soul Atmos releases. I’d love to know what other Atmos discs you’ve found particularly good and would recommend. 👍🎶

And yes… I know exactly how the “how did I end up with this many Sonos products?” thing happens. 😂

Phil Collins Face Value and No Jacket Required

Genesis - Lamb lies down on Broadway

George Michael - Faith

Ultravox - Lament

Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Welcome to the pleasure dome

Simple Minds, Howard Jones and Dire Straits too.  There’s also a decent amount of Atmos on Amazon music, Bohemian Rhapsody is fantatstic.

Plus Genesis and Marillion 5.1 mixes.

Hi all,  Good to see the interesting replies. I have an old Sonos system with a couple of Zoneplayer 90 units plus the original model Beam I got mostly for the TV to which is hard wired.  Recently the S1 controller could index the music library but failed to play it. It took some days to find the fix and in the process the Beam firmware was updated and is now a S2 only device.  The fix involved the SMB file sharing protocol and making sure v1 is turned on in Program Features (S2 does not need v1 and Windows tries to disable it due to security issues) but the important fix I found was to go to the SMB submenu of tick boxes and turn “SMBv1 Automatic Removal” OFF.  The tick on SMB reverts to a black square but that means it is still on.  And more importantly Windows will not turn off SMBv1 when it feels like it.  I know this has been a problem flagged up before so just wanted to share my experience.

that’s the nerdy bit out the way.  I’m listening mostly to Jazz these days but mostly going back in Time to Art Blakey, Horace Silver and the like.  But can’t stop listening to Hiromi Uehara lately.  The piano loves her. If you have never heard try YouTube.com/anubismusic.  I’m close on 80 so the equipment I have has aged a bit with me.  Years ago I had a couple of Lowther loudspeakers the size of small fridges. - wonderfull sound, a B&O Deck and Leak amplifier.  Now it’s the Beam and Some Bose speakers in another room. Ripped a lot of cds to FLAC mostly for convenience and have reached a point that I can’t play all my CDs there isn’t the time and if the truth be told a lot get neglected in favour of my favourites.
best regards to all

Derek

Hi Derek, nice to meet you. Whereabouts in the UK are you from?

Amazing that you're still using a couple of ZonePlayer 90s. I think that's quite a testament to Sonos really — there aren't many connected products from that era still being used today and supported in software.

Good tip on the SMB1 issue too. I use a local music library myself with quite a bit of FLAC and ALAC, so I'm always interested in the library side of things.

Sounds like you've certainly got your money's worth out of Sonos over the years! 😄

Hey Carl, nice to meet you!

📍 Location: Up in Scotland.

🔊 Setup: Running a Sonos Arc Ultra paired with the Sub Gen 4 and two Era 300s for surround. It handles Atmos content brilliantly, whether it's full-blown movie night or cranked up for music.

🎵 Music: Big fan of indie and alternative rock (bands like Smashing Pumpkins, Lonely the Brave, Manchester Orchestra), alongside classic Madchester vibes like Happy Mondays, The Charlatans, and Inspiral Carpets. Always looking out for tracks with top-notch production that really flex the spatial audio setup.

Great to see a dedicated spot for UK owners on here—cheers for getting the ball rolling!

Hi Jas, nice to meet you too! 👋

You’re very lucky living up in Scotland — it’s probably my favourite place in the UK for a holiday. We’ve spent time around Loch Lomond, Loch Ness, the Highlands, Grantown-on-Spey and Inverness over the years. Absolutely beautiful part of the country. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Nice setup too! I’m also running Arc Ultra with Era 300 surrounds and Sub 4, so completely agree about Atmos. I particularly enjoy Atmos music as well as films — when you find a really good mix it can sound fantastic. 🔊🎶
