Question

When using AirPlay from an iPhone, selecting “Play Next” causes the next track to start from the middle.

I recently purchased and have been using a SONOS ERA100, and I have discovered a reproducible issue. I am not sure whether this problem is specific to my device, so I would like to inquire.

Product:
SONOS ERA100

Issue:
When using AirPlay from an iPhone running iOS 26.4.1 with the default Music app, if I add a song to the queue using “Play Next,” the next track starts from about 30 seconds into the song.

This issue occurs consistently when “Play Next” is used while the currently playing track has about one minute remaining.

For tracks that start midway, the playback position becomes inconsistent with what is shown on the iPhone screen. In other words, the screen appears as if the track is playing from the beginning.

The same issue occurs on another iPhone in my household running iOS 26.4.1. However, an older iPod running iOS 15 plays without any problems.

In your case their are two possible issues:

  1. Bug  in iOS 26.4.1
  2. Network issues in that Airplay piggybacks on your WiFi

However, I’m more inclined to suspect iOS 26.4.1 as you say your iPod doesn’t have an issue.

One last question: Were/are you using a Beta of iOS 26.4.1?

Does this happen if you play the audio on the iPhone speaker instead of AirPlay? Could it be the Apple Music app causing the problem?

On iOS 26.4.1, I played a song in Apple Music going to the speaker. With less than 30 secs left, I picked another song “Play Next”. It played starting at the beginning. Then I did the same thing using AirPlay, with the same results. The song I added with Play Next started from the beginning. Is this how you are doing it and getting those results?

Thank you everyone for your replies.
I’ll answer your questions.

I am not using the iOS 26.4.1 beta; I am using the official release of iOS 26.4.1.

This issue does not occur when I play music using the Apple Music app without AirPlay.
Thank you for testing. I am not using Apple Music (the subscription service), but the stock Apple Music app. I use it with music imported from CDs rather than a subscription.

Sounds like, as has been pointed to before, an issue in your iOS device transmitting what is essentially a  receiver (the Sonos speaker.

II’d certainly try several things. First, as a precaution, I’d reboot the router. Second, again as a caution, I’d reboot the speakers. And I suspect most importantly, and third, I’d reboot the iOS device.

But, in case none of these things make any difference, I would recommend that you submit a system diagnostic within 10 minutes of experiencing this problem, and call Sonos Support to discuss it. Don’t post the resulting diagnostic number here.

There may be information included in the diagnostic that will help Sonos pinpoint the issue and help you find a solution.

When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.
