Volume too loud even at 1 percent

I’ve read through other posts on this, but no solutions are provided. Sonos: Get this fixed! It’s really frustrating to not be able to lower volume down to comfortable background music level.

Since all the internal data is hidden from us users submitting a diagnostic, within a few minutes of the issue, and calling Sonos support is the only way to get more than best guesses by other users.

Adjusting Volume Limit may help.

Adjusting the volume limit will have no impact on the absolute minimum volume.

Essentially the problem is that the player volume varies in integer steps of 1%. The volume limit feature doesn’t help because a scaled volume of less than 1% rounds down to zero.

Therefore any change to the minimum volume would require a change by Sonos.

Which player or input device are you struggling with?

Struggling with this on all my Sonos, including my One SL.

Mr. T is correct. There are (apparently) no volume adjustments in the app that allows you to get the volume down, or rather, the lowest value of 1% (or higher if volume is limited) is still too high.

Sonos must implement a proper handling, for example make the minimum work so that if I limit it to 50% then the volume spectrum - 1...100 - follows that relatively. Setting volume to 100 in this case should be like setting it to 50 if there were no limit.

I don’t understand why Sonos doesn’t do this. It should be a fairly easy feature.

What service are you streaming from?

My Play 5, Gen 2, plays Amazon so quietly on the minimum you have your pretty close to even hear it. Didn't check the others but in the past they were similqr.

Having dived into this just now: The only music streaming I can get down to where I want it is from Sonos Radio stations. Thanks for the tip. I have Spotify, Apple Music and some local stations, and they all behave the same.

Sonos would probably argue it’s a technical streaming issue, but if so, what should I / we be looking for in the many services? Maybe somebody here have a hint?

But still, I really can’t see why it can’t be handled properly by Sonos regardless of the service.

Really strange, but: After I fooled around with Sonos Radio stations for a bit and then went back to streaming from Apple Music, it’s like volume is adjusting better 😳

Any logic to support that?

I completely accept your logic, but damn it, as I started Sonos up this morning, like many other days, volume is lower 🤷‍♂️. And I haven’t changed any settings. The only relation I can see is that for a couple of minutes I listened to Sonos Radio station yesterday. Maybe it returns to being bad after computer restart, or in 5 minutes for some inexplicable reason, but for now I consider the issue hack-resolved.

Thank you for feedback! 🙏

@Landstad If you mean a “computer restart” as in restarting the computer your app runs on, this will not do anything: all Sonos devices are computers themselves. The apps are just remote controls.

Just one last update in case other similarly frustrated owners come by: I have checked all services I use - local stations, Spotify, Sonos Radio and Apple Music - and the problem of not being able to lower volume sufficiently - now - only applies to Apple Music streaming.

As I understand it, there’s no “standard” that sets the audio level that streaming companies should follow. Thus one may send their music at one loudness, and others may be louder or quieter than this. It’s the same with tv audio, where adverts are often louder than the program they sandwich.
