Hi - would love to buy a Sonos speaker to connect to my Bluetooth record player and then handoff via WiFi to my pair of Play:1s in another room

Is that possible?! If so would a Roam work ?

Yes, a Roam would work. 

The only minor area of concern at this moment is there seems to be some incompatibility between Sonos and some record player’s Bluetooth, but hopefully that should be resolved shortly in an update.

I’ve been using Bluetooth from my iPad to my Roam, and then to a pair of PLAY:3s a lot, recently.
