I can connect my Play:1 and use it when it’s connected via Ethernet to the router, but 30 seconds or so after I disconnect the music stops, and play:1 cannot be found on the app. Sad. I have deleted/redownloaded the app + done a factory reset. What else can I try?

Stop doing Factory Reset as it usually is not a solution.
Once you have had the Play 1 powered on and connected to Ethernet for 15 minutes , to rebuild the log data the Reset wiped, submit a diagnostic and contact tact Sonos support to have them check your radio's operation.
