Sonos Speaker Randomly Disconnects From Wi-Fi During Playback

I’m experiencing an intermittent problem with one of my Sonos speakers where it suddenly becomes unavailable in the Sonos app while I’m listening to music. The speaker still has power and appears to be running normally, but playback stops and the app either shows the speaker as unavailable or takes a long time to reconnect. The problem is inconsistent, which makes it difficult to determine what is triggering it.

Some details I’ve noticed so far:

  • The speaker can disconnect while audio is already playing.
  • Other devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network continue working normally.
  • The speaker sometimes reappears in the Sonos app after waiting for a few minutes.
  • Restarting the speaker temporarily fixes the problem.
  • The issue can return later without any obvious change to the network.
  • The problem does not seem to happen at a specific time or with a particular music service.
  • I have not noticed any obvious power-related problems with the speaker.

I’m trying to figure out whether this is more likely to be caused by the speaker itself, the Sonos app, or something related to Wi-Fi communication. Before I reset the entire Sonos system, I’d like to know what network settings, app settings, or speaker diagnostics I should check to identify why the connection keeps dropping.

Before you reset your Sonos system read the many recommendations, here and from Sonos to not do that.

What you describe is usually a Wi-Fi issue, what does the problem speaker show for the connection status?

Like Stanley_4 said, it’s probably a wifi or network issue.

Here is some information on reducing wifi interference: Reduce wireless interference

This might help too: Improve your Sonos product’s WiFi connection

But Sonos support can probably tell what the problem is and help you resolve it. Try submitting a diagnostic (Submit Diagnostics) within 10 minutes of getting the dropout. Then call Sonos Support (Sonos Support) to discuss it. They may be able to see what’s going on since they have access to information about your network and sonos system that no one here has. Don’t post the diagnostic number here.

Thanks, that’s helpful. I haven’t reset anything yet. When the speaker disappears from the Sonos app, it still has power, but its connection status appears to drop rather than the speaker actually shutting down. After waiting a few minutes or restarting the speaker, it usually becomes visible again.

Since you mentioned this is usually a Wi-Fi issue, what specific connection status or network information should I look at in the Sonos app when the speaker is working normally versus when it becomes unavailable? I’d like to compare those values during the problem rather than immediately changing router settings or resetting the system.

The linked article about WiFi interference is a really good resource…
