I have several SOnos Ray used tor speakers connected to TVs via optical cable. All TVs have IR remotes. But Sonos Ray is not able to learn the volume keys from most of the TVs.
When setting up the Ray it clearly registers the signal from the remote (the LED light up on the Ray) but the app continiues to fail and saying it does not register when prompted to press 3 times.
I have read it could be due to the remotes using the common “Toggle Bit” feature. So trying the tips related to covering the remote IR diode every second press to get the Ray to learn the remote with no succes.
Try different button press hold times. One trial should be press and quickly release. Another should be hold till the RAY acknowledges the press by a notice on the controller or the RAY acknowledge light going out.
Another approach is to configure the handheld remote to control an A/V receiver. The model is arbitrary. It’s usually best to pick a model/manufacturer that is not nearby. Use this code to train RAY. We are beginning to see remotes offer a ‘Sonos’ model.
Thank for the reply!
Already tried different hold times. The ray acknowligdes the light every time. The remotes are locked for the TVs (differnet brand, Philips, SOny and TCL) and cannot be configured to anything else unfortunately.
Maybe the onle solution is a universal remote to replace the TVs remote.
I suppose there is not a swoftware update planned to get the Ray to work with IR remotes?
RAY works with most remotes. What model TV’s?
There is something odd about your situation. Maybe there is some unfortunate background illumination. I once had situation where remotes didn’t work and by accident I noticed that, when I stood in a certain spot, remotes did work. There was an emission from a small section of wallpaper when the sun was out. I was very surprised because this was a North room with lots of trees outside.
3 philips TVs from 2016 - 2020. A new sony tv and a TCL TV a few years old. The TVs remotes of coruse work fine for adjusting volume. The Rays are sitting 20 cm below the TVs
There is no backgound illumination. It is done in daylight. In a room with white painted walls. And the Ray also light up when i press the volume buttons three times. Tried close to the ray, far from the ray. Different press times et. My old logtitech universal remote has no issues learning the remotes signals.
As far as I can understands SOnos do not support the toggle bit feature Phillips tv remote uses. Making philips IR remotes uncompatible.
Tried a universal remote(the logitech) set to samsung. with no issues in the ray learning the volume buttons.
