Sonos constantly dropping out

Hi, for the last 3 weeks or so Sonos is constantly dropping out and losing connection. Sometimes it skips through tracks, other times it just stops playing. I also can not connect to Sonos speakers via the Spotify app. This all worked before and we haven’t changed our internet setup. Is anyone else having this problem? What can I do to fix it?

It sounds like there may be some network interference to me.
Have you tried powering off everything: router/network, speakers and your phone.
Wait 5 minutes, then starting with the router/network, power it on and allow it to fully boot.

Next, power on each speaker, allowing it to fully boot before you power on the next.
Then power up your phone and connect to your system.

Three feet is usually a safe distance.

I have had multiple issues with Sonos close to another radio or RF emitting device or even each other. Moving solved the issues.

I’ve been experiencing this issue for about a year now (worked perfectly for the two years prior).  I have a Sonos One Gen 2, and I have been working with an Engineer (AT SONOS) for the past 6 months to resolve this issue.  They even replaced my speaker, but I have the same frustrations with the new one.  I ask it to play (a random artist) on Pandora, and it replies “Playing (the artist) on Pandora.  What would you like to do next?”  And it plays nothing!  Like I said, 6 months working with an Engineer at Sonos and we cannot get the speaker to work correctly (with Alexa).

MY SOLUTION:  I found one solution, however, that has worked correctly for the past several weeks.  Plug your Sonos speaker into a timer (like the one you use to turn your Christmas tree on/off at certain times of the day). I have my timer to turn electric off at 6 am, and back on at 6:30 am.  This basically is like unplugging your speaker for ½ hour each morning.  By doing this, the speaker has worked perfectly every day.  I feel like something happens in the speaker or software that loses a connection.  By “rebooting” the speaker off/on each morning, it seems to now be working properly.  Not a total fix, but hopefully this will be a permanent band-aid to get the speaker working properly.

Okay, I experienced the same…

I connect via ethernet and set dhcp bind in the router making it getting same ip every connect…

didn't help at all, got drop outs every 5 or 10 minutes, forcing me te powercycle the connect…

what helpt was using the FIRST ethernet port on my connect, in stead ot the second one, in this way you are using eth0 instead of eth1 ….

I don't exactly know what the underlaying reason for this is, but it helpt me, no crashes anymore...

I had the same issue and want to encourage folks to submit a diagnostic report and call Sonos support.

They were helpful in identifying which of my 8 Sonos devices was losing network packages and affecting/dropping the whole system. The culprits were Playbase and Beam soundbars in different bedrooms, both of which are on or under metal TV stands that may have caused the interference. I was able to connect the two culprits via ethernet (instead of wi-fi), disabled the wi-fi on both soundbars, and so far that has resolved the issue. Of course, this only works if you are able to connect the culprit via ethernet - if not, then you need to find the cause of the wi-fi interference by moving stuff around...

Just wanted to add that I first tried all the other suggestions for rebooting everything, and also assigned static IP addresses to each of my 8 Sonos units. None of that worked - the diagnostic report revealed the true cause of wi-fi interference. I’ll leave the static IP addresses in place and will report back if the issue arises again.

Sometimes inches matter, you might try putting some short blocks or stands under the Sonos to get it off the metal.

  1. Sonos equipment bought in 2015, two play 1 satellites being last two. Also used Soundbar & Sub.   Originally my unit used the Sonos hub.  Then that stopped working because of software issues.   Advice suggested using WiFi to connect all five devices.  Soundbar uses Optic Cable to TV.  Then used app connected to my 2.4 MHg WiFi band.   It connected all five Sonos devices & worked for a week.  Now doesn’t and can’t get Sonos system connected to WiFi.   Directly connected Soundbar using Ethernet cable to router.  That worked but isn’t feasible.  Haven  unplugged each device to reset but that’s my next try.   Don’t have time nor patience to repeat this step consistently.

Sounds a lot like a router issue. When you power off all your Sonos devices, reboot the router, and check it for firmware updates, if you can. Wait two minutes for the router to come back up, then plug in your Sonos devices to power.

Which Sonos soundbar do you have? There were two that connected via optical. They’re both fairly old, and now discontinued, although both are still supported.

Might be worth checking the Sonos Network Requirements FAQ, too.
