I want to use my old Sonos 5 in my shed and play music through my old iPod via an 3.5mm aux cable. But it’s not working

You have to connect to the PLAY:5 (there is no gen 1 Five, only a Five) first with the controller via ethernet/wifi in order to turn on the line in. Be sure to set it to “auto-play”, too.

There’s no way around that. Connect in your house where there’s internet, once you’ve set it up to be ‘on”, you can then unplug the PLAY:5, move it out to your shed, and the line in should work at that point. Be careful that your iPod is plugged in to the line in, and not the headphone jack, and at the least, start with the volume at 50% on the iPod.

Honestly, I’d set it all up inside, where there’s an internet connection first, then move it outside, just in case.

You need to enable Autoplay  on the speaker while it is connected to a network. Have you done that?
