I have an orginal play 1 that is connected to my wifi network but I cannot see it in other music apps such as spotify - any ideas?

What mobile device is the Spotify App running on and is it operating on the same WiFi network subnet? Are you looking in the direct connections (API) or are you perhaps mistakenly looking in Bluetooth or Airplay device lists?
I have a Play:1 here, called ‘Guest Room’ and that shows up okay in the latest Spotify App running on an iPad with iPadOS v 17.0.3.

Maybe try rebooting your local router, just in case it’s a network issue.
