No, a Play:1 has no Bluetooth support.

Does Play 1 software allow 'Play from device' as a 'source'? I thought it did (in the past) but can't find the option now... 

No, both Apple and Android removed the ability to use the device as a music share for 3rd party hardware.  It was seen as a security risk.
