joining/grouping speakers

I am selecting a speaker that is playing and then open up the join button and select another speaker or two and select apply. It acts like it is working but when it goes back to the playing speaker it doesn't add the new speaker/s.  It has worked interesting past but isn't working now.

That suggests that there is either a firmware or network inconsistency, or a fault on the speakers. I’d suggest two things. First, unplug all speakers from power, then reboot your router. Wait two minutes, then plug your Sonos back into power. Wait another two minutes, then check for updates on your Sonos controller. It should catch both controller and firmware updates. Once those have been applied, if necessary, test.

Powering down and restarting all the speakers and the router did solve the problem.
