Feature Request - Adding Synfonisk to a Zone

Currently it is not possible to add the IKEA Synfonisk speaker to a zone. I just recently got an Era 100 where that‘s possible and it would be amazing if the feature could be added to the Synfonisk speakers as well.

Hello @staehlin.joel, welcome back!

I’ve marked this thread as a feature request and forwarded it to the appropriate teams for consideration.

Thank you for the post and feedback, it is much appreciated.

That’s not going to happen. For reasons never explained, only the newest hardware (I think of it as “S3” though I get berated for using that term, despite there being a clear firmware version difference between them and the older S2 gear) can participate in Zones, and the Symfonisk stuff doesn’t fall into that category, nor will it.

If someone could provide a rational explanation for the restrictive Zone-supporting hardware list, I would love to hear it.

(And by Zone I mean the 2025 interpretation, not the 2010 version).

S1 and S2 are not delineation's about firmware versions or how speakers can be bonded to form a single Sonos room, but the communication protocol between devices, as I understand it. I get your point regarding Sonos moving on to the latest generation of Sonos, and woudl agree, but that not what the ‘S’ tiers are about.

Regarding Zones, they were originally created for business customers primarily.  In that sense, it made sense not to include the Ikea speakers since they were never designed for business use.  It was added to the residential/consumer side of Sonos because they could do it easily without much rich or added support costs. I would assume that ikea speakers have the required hardware to support zones, but perhaps they just not see too many customers wanting to build a zone out Ikea speakers.

Aside - I consider Sonos to be in their 4th generation. Zone Players  gen → Play gen → Voice Control gen (for lack of a better name) → Era/Atmos gen.

There’s one more reason why the OP’s request may never see daylight is this…

The Sonos/Ikea partnership has ended. Sonos will continue to support the speakers. However, I seriously doubt that any advance updates to further integrate the speakers into specialized Sonos areas will materialize. JMHO.

I would love to see this feature happen. I have a recordplayer on the line in of the Era 100 and would love to autoplay to all the speakers in the room.

Can you not do that using the Group feature? Set the Era playing, and then add whatever other speakers/rooms you want playing to. (You can even use it as an input to a different room whilst playing something different on the Era.)

If these are your only speakers (and even if you have more), why not just Group them?

I made a group called “downstairs” but I can’t find groups while selecting the autoplay device. Am I missing something?

@Bas Petter

Groups and Autoplay? If you created a Group you must select the speaker iCon in the “Now playing” box at the bottom of the screen then select your group.

Assuming I’m correctly understanding your issue….

  • If you are using a Connect, Port or Amp with 3rd party speakers with line-in with a room designated as AutoPlay it’s advisable not to include that Room in a Group. As you can see if you are using the AutoPlay Room you can’t select it a second time as part of a Group.
  • You can manually Group in other Rooms with the room being used as the Autoplay Room

You can’t Autoplay to a (named) group. You Autoplay to a speaker that can be part of a group.

So I still have to manually select the group in the Sonos app after the Era100 started playing the line in audio?

I don't do this, but it seems like if you picked the Group Coordinator to play to the Group should stay intact.

I can make a zone with the Era 100 and the One and use them to autoplay my recordplayer. But I can’t add the IKEA Bookshelf to join them. These 3 speakers are in my diningroom and I have the Beam in my living room. I would like to autoplay to the diningroom.

The dining room is a physical room. Unlike Google Sonos does not adhere to a physical room as a concept, instead calling a (set) group of speakers a room - or a zone if you want them to really function as one speaker. So your dining room is made up from a room (the Symfonisk) and a zone (Era 100 and One). You could try to group the zone with the Symfonisk and Autoplay to either one of them. I am not sure if a zone can be part of a group though.

Zones can be grouped with other Sonos products in your system, and multiple zones can be part of a group.
