Era 300 Stand Installation troubleshooting

I am installing my Sonos Era 300 stand. At step 3, I can’t seem to figure out how to install the washer far enough into the base so that the stand pole isn’t rather loose and unstable. Does anyone who has successfully installed the stand have any tips to make it stable?

You fasten the washer and the base with the screw. Where does this go wrong for you?
