Can I pair the new Era 100 with my existing Play 1 so I can play music in stereo. ’ If yes, are there any downsides/discernible sound differences to affect the stereo quality ?

No. You can only pair like speakers together.

You can, however, “group” them together, just like grouping the PLAY:1 with any other Sonos speaker.

Thanks both. There I was thinking I might get a cheaper way of getting ‘Line in’ on my system so I could get stereo from my turntable.  But it looks  like I’m going to have to buy a Port or two Era 100’s

Wellll, if you use Era 100 for surround,  the line inputs are turned off. So is Bluetooth.

Maybe get an era 100 for turntable and used play:1? A lot of people are going to be upgrading.
