I have recently added a wiim ultra to my ecosystem. My use case is two fold; firstly I use it as a headphone amp for Spotify, my NAS library and my turntable, because Sonos inexplicably has no option to integrate headphones (even the ones they make)

Second, for aforementioned turntable I use the wiim ultra to cast a flac stream via DLNA to my Sonos set up.

It works great, I chose a target speaker in the Wiim app for the stream and then group the additional speakers.

Except when I change the volume on the wiim it only affects the linked speakers, not the group. This means I have to use the Sonos app to control the group volume. Annoying 

I have spoken to Sonos support who didn't really want to discuss as they state this "is not a recommended set up" (despite the fact they have no alternative recommendation for my use case(s)).

I have logged a feature request but thought I'd check here if I'm missing something or anyone has found a workaround...

As for alternate methods to what you are doing, I don’t know of any - controlling the volume of a group is a function that only the Sonos App can presently do.

That's not accurate: Spotify Connect changes group volume. It even recognises the group in the Spotify App (Record Player +2)

Though, for the OP, it’s still opening an app, so not any easier than opening the Sonos app. And if the source is not Spotify - which it is not - I don’t see the point.

Please note that while I tested Sonos Voice Control prior to my earlier answer, a voice command would affect the volume for the whole group, but it did not set all speakers in the group to the same level. If you would just like all speakers to turn up a bit when you ask and not for them to be set to the same level, then SVC would be a viable solution to adjusting the volume, assuming your speakers support it.

Would that work with Alexa (I don't have any Sonos speakers with voice control but I do have a bunch of echo devices...

I don’t think that is possible, no. My documentation does not include any such commands.

If it is at all possible (the documentation may not be exhaustive), you would likely need to define the group in the Alexa app first, using a name for the group that is unique in both the Alexa and Sonos apps.

I see you have a portable speaker, however - you can install SVC on that.
