Question

Can I add a Play:1 to a system that’s currently ONLY S1?

Subject line says it all.  I have an OLD system: ZP80 and ZP100, on the S1 app.  I’m a super early adopter, on a super low budget.  I can get a Play:1 (used, obviously) for a good price.  My concern is that because the Play:1 seems to be compatible with both S1 and S2, adding to my otherwise purely-S1 system will break it.  Any feedback is appreciated!

It’s certainly feasible. You may need to ‘reset’ the PLAY:1 from S2 to S1, if it’s already been upgraded. Instructions are here: https://support.sonos.com/en-us/article/downgrade-a-sonos-product-to-s1

On the other hand, if it’s already on S1, all you’d need to do is a factory reset, which is always smart when purchasing a used product, then just using the ‘add a new product’ process in the controller.

Your first action with any used product is a Factory Reset. This will remove any potentially conflicting detail's belonging to the previous owner.

Now you can add the compatible product to your system.

EDIT: As always, some people type faster than I.

In a nutshell, if it is currently on S2 then you will need to create a seperate S2 system, reset it and add it to that. Then downgrade it's firmware to s1 using the s2 app. You can then install it on your existing s1 system using the s1 app.

If it is on s1 to start with then just reset it and add to your existing system.

Whilst playing about with local library SMB versions I have recently taken a Play:1 from s2 to s1, used it on s1 and then taken back to s2. I was pleasantly surprised at how reasonably easy it was 🤓

The referenced instructions above are good 👍
