I have a couple of devices I want to give my daughter for her new house - a Play:3 and Play:1. Is this sufficient for a system or do I need a controller such as a port?

Even just one of the speakers is fine as a system - but a Play:1 and a Play:3 cannot be stereo-paired so they’ll need to be set up as two rooms.
She’ll need to access the app/web controller to set it up and control it. This is going through some teething issues so it is worth considering using the S1 app for a while till the new software is more complete and stable.
