Are there different gens with the newer Sonos five….. I’ve seen black units with a while logo and I’ve seen black units with a black logo, are these units different hardware wise or is it purely cosmetic

And the difference between the gen 2 and five, what are they, cosmetic only?

Faster processor and more storage/RAM on the Five, so it is more futureproof. Other than that, just cosmetics, they sound identical.

There are not any generations of the Five.  There are three different models, the Play:5 Gen 1, the Play:5 Gen 2, and the Five.  See below (in order):

Play:5 Gen 1

Play:5 Gen 2

The Play 5 gen 2 can be used on both OS - S1 and S2. The Play 5 gen 1 only runs on S1 and the Five only on S2. Take your pick. I personally did sell all Sonos gear that only ran on S2, downgraded everything remaining to S1 and do not look back.

Where as I found that gifting my S1 only PLAY:5 gen 1 to an acquaintance, and going with the newer, better sounding speakers with newer features worked better for me.
