Really irritating that it seems only a Sonos line in adapter will work with my new Era 300 (how very Apple!) but absolutely infuriating that they don’t have any in stock and I can’t find them anywhere. How do I get hold of one, please?

You wait until they come in stock. And the reason you can’t use a generic adapter is generic USB adapters are analog output, not analog input. I imagine if one could find a generic analog input 3.5mm to USB-C adapter it would work, but the only one I’ve ever seen is the one sold at Sonos.
