Translation for English speakers:

I wanted to raise a question related to Home Cinema configuration and USB-C line input.

I currently have a system composed of a Sonos Arc Ultra, a Sub Mini and two Era 100 SL configured as surround speakers. When the Era 100 SL are linked to the Home Cinema system, I cannot independently use the USB-C input of one of them to connect a record player and play the audio throughout the system.

I think it would be very interesting if Sonos allowed to configure two operating modes within the same system, without the need to unlink or reconfigure the Era 100 SL each time:

Home Cinema Mode: Arc Ultra + Sub Mini + Era 100 SL as surround speakers.

Music Mode: Use the USB-C input of one of the Era 100 SL to connect a turntable and play music on all speakers in the system.

From the user's point of view, it would be ideal if the system could detect the USB-C input and allow you to select the Era 100 SL as an input source when you want to listen to the record player, while keeping the Home Cinema settings saved.

Would it be technically possible to enable this feature through a future software update? I think it would be a very useful improvement, especially for users who use their Era 100 as surround but also want to use them as an audio input for a turntable without having to disassemble the Home Cinema configuration.

If I understand the nature of the connection with surrounds, it would not be an easy thing. They’d need to rewrite the nature of this connection. But this request has been made, and discussed in dozens of dozens of threads, starting back when Sonos first introduced the PLAYBAR with surrounds. I would encourage you to seek out those threads and read them.

My suspicion is, if this were an ‘easy’ change, Sonos would have done so years and years ago.

Te animaría a buscar esos hilos y leerlos.

I'm relatively new to Sonos; I've been using brand products for about 3 months and, so far, I'm quite happy with the system. However, this is a problem that I have encountered and that I was completely unaware of. I also didn't know that these forums existed and it has been here where I have been able to verify that I am not the only one who encounters this limitation.

I currently have an Arc Ultra, a Sub Mini and two Era 100 SL configured as surround speakers. The problem appears when I want to use the USB-C input of one of the Era 100 SL to connect a record player and play the sound throughout the system. As the Era 100 SL is linked to Home Cinema, this possibility is limited.

I have found a solution, although it involves an additional expense: buy another Era 100 SL and configure it in an independent room. This way you could connect the record player to that speaker and then play the music throughout the system. It would probably be the most economical solution within the alternatives we currently have, but it is still necessary to buy another speaker to solve a software limitation.

Personally, I think it would be a function that Sonos could solve through an update. If you worked on it, it would be very interesting to be able to use the line/USB-C input of one of the surround speakers independently and, at the same time, send that audio to the entire system, without having to buy another speaker or modify the Home Cinema configuration.

I think it would be a very useful improvement for users who have a Home Cinema system and also want to use our speakers to listen to music from a record player.

As I understand it the 5Ghz connection between a Sonos soundbar and surrounds will not work both ways for music (only for voice commands - it’s how I use a Sonos One for Google Assistant with my Arc Ultra). You are not the first to ask this since the Playbar was first available with surrounds in 2015. If it would have been “just a software update” they would probably have done it already.

Sonos has this line-in limitation for surrounds listed on the support site:

Surround sound guidelines and limitations

Limitations

The following features will be disabled on Sonos products used as surround speakers:

  • AirPlay
  • Bluetooth audio playback
  • Line-in
  • Subwoofer output

The limitation is in the way speakers used as surrounds are bonded with sonos soundbars. As 106rallye explained, the soundbar communicates with the surround speakers using a one-way low latency hidden 5ghz WiFi. Whether playing music or watching TV, the communication with surrounds is done through the soundbar. They can’t be “grouped” nor are they available to play to separately. You would need to disconnect them as surrounds so they are their own room. Then you can do what you want.

But, also as mentioned above, many people have asked for the ability to easily disconnect surround for separate use. Even to automatically re-pair as a stereo pair. Even though it has been a request for many years, Sonos has not done it. It must not be as easy as you think it might be.

Translation:

I don't quite understand Sonos' limitation with USB-C line input.

In my case I have an Arc Ultra, a Sub Mini and two Era 100 SL as surrounds.

If I send music over Wi-Fi, the system plays it perfectly through all speakers, including the Arc Ultra. If I use Bluetooth, exactly the same thing happens: the audio is distributed throughout the system without any problem.

So, why can't the same be done when I connect an audio source via USB-C to one of the Era 100 SL?

The audio signal is an input signal, just like when it arrives through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. WHat is difficult to understand is that the system is able to receive and distribute audio through all speakers through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but that there is a specific limitation when the signal enters through the USB-C input of an Era 100.

In addition, we are talking about a fully integrated system in Sonos. I'm not trying to use the Era 100 as a standalone speaker, but to take advantage of a line input that the speaker itself incorporates to play the audio in the system.

Is it really a hardware limitation or is it a software decision?

Because if it's a software limitation, I think Sonos should seriously consider enabling this feature through an update. It would be an especially interesting possibility for those of us who have the Era 100 configured as surrounds and want to connect a record player or another analogue source to the system.

It doesn't make much sense that you have to dismantle the Home Theatre configuration or create another independent room simply to be able to use an input that is already physically available on the speaker.

Answer

It does make sense. A surround speaker is governed by the soundbar. So you are using an input on a speaker that has no mind of its own because it is being governed by the soundbar. And it is using a direct 5Ghz connection that has, as I understand it, not been designed to work as a two way connection - unlike the network connection that is used for grouping or sharing a line in or bluetooth connection . There’s no more to explain - this is how it works. Again - if this was simple Sonos would have changed it. People have asked for this for more than half of the existence of the company.
