Do you need the Playbar to create a home theater system?
Is the Playbar required to create a home theater system? Or can a home theater be created with just 1s and 3s?

Only the PLAYBAR will let you create a 5.1 Home Theatre system.
You can then choose if you want to use PLAY:1 or PLAY:3s are Surround Speakers.

This is only partially true. If you are looking for a low-end solution, for a small room, the soundbar can approximate the front L/R channels. If you plan to add the Sub and larger rears than the play:1 you will be disappointed since the soundbar is not powerful enough to keep up with the Sub and rear in a larger home theatre implementation. Given the bar, sub, rear L/R price point I would look elsewhere if you want the best possible sound experience for the dollar.
