I really love my Sonos speaker system -- when it works! But nearly every time I try to use them, the system demands an update, which fails, and I cycle through resets, reboots, etc., for half an hour, give up, try again. This is extremely frustrating. I have a good wi-fi connection, a high quality router, reasonable tech skills, and none of my other products give me these problems.

WTF?

Please don’t instruct me on reboots, restarts, updates, etc. I could write the manual at this point. I’m just sick of having to take these steps, and have them fail repeatedly, every time I want to listen to music.

Does anyone else encounter this constant frustration, and if so, are there other speaker systems you’ve used that are more reliable?

You complain that “nearly every time I try to use them, the system demands an update”. Turn off auto updates. Then you can install updates when it suits you rather than the next time you want to use the system to play music.

You ask about “other speaker systems you’ve used that are more reliable?” and I have to say : yes, my Sonos system.

My system has 12 speakers. All prove reliable, and readily available.

I own 10 Sonos speakers. They’ve been unreliable since the may 2024 update. I bought 2 WiiM amp during Black Friday sales. They’ve replaced Sonos amps in my main living areas. Have had zero issues with them. Obviously YMMV but I’ve had a good experience and recommend.

  1. If you power off your speakers and power them on when needed, you will need to update, especially while Sonos is working to fix issues with the app. In this case, it would be better to have them on all the time with auto updates turned on.
  2. Rebooting your router after updates, especially if your speakers have been turned off is a good thing to do. A better solution would be to assign static IPs to all your speakers.
  3. If you have newer speakers in your system and you have issues with an older speaker, hardwiring that speaker to your router/network would be beneficial to help the older hardware keep up with the newer hardware. I have my only Play 1 hardwired to my network and have no connection or updates issues.
  4. If your router/ network broadcasts a different SSID for your 5 and 2.4 GHz channels, consider making them the same with the same passwords so that your phone is not switching back and forth between them.
  5. Check for network interference. Or to see which speaker has a good connection, copy and paste this link making sure to type in your IP before hitting enter:

Select network matrix. If there are any red or yellow boxes, that speaker has a weak connection.

There are many things that can cause connection or update issues. While it can be frustrating while Sonos gets the app working properly l, many updates can be expected.
There have been many requests for an alternative brand, I cannot/will not suggest anything but Sonos here. The product has worked flawlessly for me since day one.

Update problems are the one thing that is 100%  consistent with my Sonos experience.

Playing music or Volume control? Naaaah.

Speakers crapping out when updating? Guaranteed.
