i have a pair of sonos 5 and a pair of sonos 1;s i have put the 1;s and the 5’s in the same room then bonded the two rooms together so that i can have them working together...but is their a way to connect the 5;s to the 1;s directly and not through grouping rooms

No.

You can directly connect, Pair, two like Sonos but unlike ones must be Grouped.

What were you trying to accomplish?

ive got a bat cave a small room...so i have the 5;s at the back and the two ones either side of my computer at the front which i play spotify from...so ive switched the front pair of ones in reverse stereo to the 5;s to generate a cross fade in the central listening position...i was hoping to get a REAL quadrophonic sound...i noticed u can add a sub to the 5;s would a mini sub connect to the 5;s and then i group the 1;s..so just to confirm u can not attach the “tweeter” ones to the 5;s “directly”

To cut through all the back and forth you can only stereo pair like speakers. Five with a Five or One with a One. Each stereo pair would be a room. You cannot stereo pair a Five with a One. FYI, even a single Sonos speaker must be assigned as a room. You can group as many rooms together as you like in any combination.

Adding a sub or sub mini can only be bonded to one stereo pair or a single speaker. If all speakers are in the same room the sub will only play the low frequencies sent to it by speaker or stereo pair it is bonded to. You may get the illusion that all speakers in the room are sharing the low frequencies even though some are not bonded to the sub.

Crossing placing stereo pairs at opposite angles will not produce a Quadraphonic sound. Although your ears may deceive you and suggest you are listening to a Quad setup. You’ll have to experiment and decide what speaker positioning sounds pleasing to you.

thanks that was very helpful ...last question can u direct bond two 5;s with a small sound bar like a ray and then add a mini sub woofer to try to get that immersive sound..for this bat cave

Yes to both. However, the Fives would only be used as surrounds and no longer function as an independent stereo pair. Also the line-in would not be functional. However, in the app for the room with the Ray you can set the surrounds to play in full stereo for music and ambient for movies. The Ray would be active in all modes assigned to the surrounds.

I'd not bond the Play 5 or Five to a soundbar when you have the option to use the Ones as that would get you full use of the larger Sonos.

You could make a Soundbar, One, Sub room that could either provide the surround channels if present in your source or provide Ambient or Full sound modes. Getting an Atmos capable soundbar would give you that option too.

Group in the Fives for non TV sources for more sound, but at the expense of audio imaging.
