When I cast from an music app via wifi I can't find sonos arq in the list. Arc is connected to my TV and therefore the TV starts every time I cast music. So I am getting sound through sonos Arc but because of the TV which is connected to arc.

I would like to directly stream from android app to arc.  Are there any settings in the sonos app?

What app are you using to stream music.

First..all devices have to be on the same WiFi network.

  1. To stream from the Sonos app you have to have a subscription to the streaming service like Spotify (or another service) for example and then add it to the Sonos app.
  2. To stream directly from the streaming service app on your device using Spotify again as the example you just have to click the speaker icon in its app and select the Sonos speaker.
  3. You can also stream directly from the Apple Music app on your device using Airplay to a capable Sonos Speaker.

Bottom-line your TV does not have to be on to stream music to a Sonos soundbar. So you need to tell us exactly what you are doing to stream music to your Sonos.

BTW…there is a difference between what you call Casting (which typically involves video) and Streaming which is audio only. Casting does require that the TV be turned on whereas Streaming music to Sonos does not.

The app is a simple remote control, pretty much like the remote control for your TV.

Hi Pepparkakan84,

The reason your TV starts up is that you are likely using the 'Cast' feature on your Android phone to the TV itself (via Chromecast or DLNA), which then triggers the Arc via the HDMI-CEC connection.

Unfortunately, Sonos speakers do not support native Google Cast (Chromecast). This is why the Arc doesn't show up in your standard 'Cast' list in apps like YouTube or Chrome.

To play music directly to the Arc without the TV:

  1. Use the Sonos App: You have to add your music service (Spotify, Tidal, etc.) inside the Sonos app settings.

  2. The Catch: As I found out the hard way, Sonos requires a Premium/Paid subscription for almost every service (especially YouTube Music) to work through their app. If you have a free account, it often won't even show up.

  3. Spotify Connect: If you use Spotify, you can usually see the Arc directly in the Spotify app under 'Devices,' which bypasses the TV.

I also spent a long time figuring out how to play personal music files (MP3s/FLAC) from a laptop or phone since the new app makes it very difficult. If you have a library of your own files and don't want to pay for a subscription just to hear them, let me know. I have a step-by-step guide on how to set up a 'Music Library' share to get your local files working!"
