Get to know Sonos Roam

A simultaneous connection to both WiFi and Bluetooth makes streaming wherever you are seamless. When you’re listening at home Roam connects to your system and streams on WiFi, and when you leave it intuitively switches to Bluetooth and automatically re-pairs with your mobile device.

With an all-new feature called Sound Swap, you can hold the play/pause button on the speaker to switch the music to the nearest speaker on your system, making it easy to move music from room-to-room.

Seamless connectivity also unlocks Bluetooth streaming for your entire system, with the Sonos app allowing you to group any of your Sonos speakers to Roam when streaming with Bluetooth. Roam works with more than 100 streaming services, including Sonos Radio, and is easily controlled with the Sonos app, your voice with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, Apple AirPlay 2, or directly from your favorite music service app.

Roam was created to deliver an incredible sound experience no matter where you are. Like all Sonos products, Roam was tuned by industry leaders across music and film to ensure the speaker reproduces content exactly how the creator intended. A carefully designed acoustic architecture delivers rich, detailed sound with the clarity, depth, and fullness you’d expect from a larger speaker.

Automatic Trueplay is now available when streaming via Bluetooth as well as Wi-Fi, and means Roam is always tuned for the best listening experience in any environment.

Available in shadow black or lunar white, Roam’s tactile triangular shape and soft profile is comfortable to pick up and looks great inside the home. Combining elegance and durability, Roam is dust proof and fully waterproof with a rigorously tested IP67 rating, and features silicone end caps and physical buttons to protect against drops or bumps.

Roam is ready for any adventure with up to 10 hours of continuous playback on a single charge and up to 10 days of battery life when not in use.

To recharge, Roam connects to a custom magnetic wireless charger from Sonos sold separately, any Qi wireless charger, or with the USB-C cable included in the box.

Even the packaging leaves a light footprint, with a structure that is made of 100% sustainably-sourced paper, minimizes the use of inks, and includes no single-use plastics.

Roam is available starting April 20 for $169, €179, £159, NOK1799, SEK1999, DKK1349. You can pre-order today on sonos.com.

How does this compare to my 3 year old Amazon tap?

I don’t think you’re going to find too many comparisons between the two products, but based on Sonos history and the reviews coming out, I can’t imagine the Roam isn’t an improvement over the Tap.

Hi,If we preordered it, will we receive it by the 20th or will it ship the 20th?

Supposed to receive by the 20th.

For those in Australia, the sales team told me the Roam will ship on the 20th via TNT from Melbourne. So anyone Melbourne metro can potentially expect it same day.

Hi do you know if the Sono ROAM and Sonos One sound quality will be equivalent?

I will use it at home and also if I like the bluetooth capabilities I wouldn’t loose the quality of the sound.

Thanks

There are two options potentially.  First you could go to your local retailer and see if they have a setup for you to listen to. Not sure if Sonos is doing that with the Roam, and of course, the acoustics in the store are different than your home.  The other option is google ‘Sonos Roam’ and read some of the many reviews out on the product.  The general consensus seems to be that it comes closer than you’d think to the One and does a pretty good job with the bass, but won’t go as loud.

Or, you could just wait till friends get it.

They definitely will not be equivalent.  Sonos One will be better as it is larger/heavier with different component parts (but it is also not intended to be a portable speaker).    If you do not intend to use it in the bathroom/shower or take out of the house, you should get a One.

I have 4 Ones in my house, but will be buying a Roam for the bathroom.

I’d agree. The size of the internal speakers is very different, and the Roam is battery powered, both of which would suggest not the same quality of sound.

I am thinking about getting two Roam’s. Can someone comment on how easy it is to setup two Roam’s into a stereo pair for the bedroom and how easy it is to take just one of them into the bathroom/shower in mono mode and then take it back to the bedroom for stereo mode? Same for the back yard, I might want to take one out back and one out front and have them split and then when returned to MB have them back in Stereo mode.

Since they haven’t delivered any, other than to media reviewers, not specifically.

However, since they will use the same Sonos controller as all other speakers, setting them up will be fairly easy. However, moving from a stereo pair to a single mono speaker is not something that would happen just by physically moving a speaker, and would require a complete “set up” in the controller as you moved from either situation to the other.

Not sure if the intention was that the 2 roams would still be a pair, but just temporarily configured as mono instead of stereo.  You can do this on an amp, but I don’t think you can on other Sonos devices.   Even if you did, pretty sure the 2 speakers need to stay fairly close to each other (same room) to wirelessly connect.

Another option would be to each of them in bluetooth mode when you don’t want them to be a stereo pair. I’m not exactly sure how that works.  I have a Move, but just one.  And the Roam operates a little different since it is still on WiFi when in bluetooth mode.  Not exactly sure what happens to the stereo pair in that scenario.

The best solution might be not to stereo pair them at all, but just keep them as two separate mono speakers in your MB.

Looks like things are moving in the UK, my orders have moved to “Preparing to Ship”

Good to see 👍

Mine shipped yday. In US midwest. Yeah!

Hmm, mine didn’t.  I’m on the east coast.  Anyone on the east coast get a shipment notice (who pre-ordered as soon as it was available for pre-ordering)?

Dear Sonos...why is the white Roam and white Roam charger two different shades of white?  Seems like a miss to me.

For what it’s worth… I just ordered both in white anyway.

Glad to hear some have now shipped! Can’t wait to see more reviews!

Hopefully UK orders will be shipping soon, mine has been sat “Preparing to Ship” since Wednesday.  From what I’ve been told they ship from Netherlands, lets hope they don’t get stuck due to the whole Brexit fiasco.

I got the notice as well, and noticed that the delivery date is the 20th.  It usually doesn’t take 4 days to get to Houston from the west coast, so they are clearly trying to get delivery dates on the 2oth.  Not sure if Sonos has an east coast warehouse, but I wouldn’t be surprised if those are shipped out tomorrow if the shipping time is shorter...or something like that.

I believe Sonos is using the lunar white color because they found the actual white didn’t do well outdoors, or hold up to marks and such.  It might be a bit more expensive?  So perhaps they kept the charger plain white as lunar white raised the cost significantly?  Don’t know.

I got the lunar white Roam as well, so will see how much of an issue it is.

My pair of black Roams is on its way. Should be delivered by monday next week. I am so interested to see how it compares to our Play 1 and Move speakers. I have bought wireless phone chargers from Ikea for 5$ each to put them on to charge.

Where do you live?  Are you in the US?

Has anyone who pre-ordered the white received a shipping notice yet?  Mine still shows back-ordered.

Black - and still back-ordered.  I don’t think the color matters.  I think in the US (unless you live far from a shipping site), they are shipping on Monday.  I know I have received shipments in one day from them in the past (I live in PA -- and they have a big shipment facility in PA -- probably about 2 hours from me by car).

Actually, I just called and was told my ship date is 5/7.  I pre-ordered back in early March, so I’m guessing the white ones are running late.  I also ordered the charger, so that may be a factor as well.

A later ship date could also be related to EXACTLY when in “early” March you pre-ordered.  If it wasn't the first day, March 9th, you could be pushed back to a later batch.  I pre-ordered at the very first opportunity -- on March 9th -- and was told I’m in the first batch (but no shipment yet).
