Why can't I use any usb with a power hard connected vs adapter

Not sure what you’re asking. 
 

For power, the USB adapter (technically, what is feeding it) has to meet the requirements/needs that the Sonos device needs. So things like the ‘small’ Apple adapter won’t work, while the 65 watt is enough.

For music, the standard USB adapter transfers the music one way, unfortunately in the way Sonos doesn’t react to, essentially from USB to 3.5mm adapters. Sonos requires the other way, 3.5 mm (or any input) to the USB so it can feed that analog signal, changed to digital, to the Sonos line in input. 

That direction of conversion, as well as analog to digital is fairly rare. Sonos makes one, but I don’t think I can point to another manufacturer. I assume there are some, but I just don’t know anything about them.
