Sonos Play setup loop: new units quarantined (upnpovertls) until firmware updates

Summary

New Sonos Play (S58) units ship on firmware 94.1-71219-manufacturing. When added to an existing household running 97.1-80312, the new unit is placed in the household's QuarantinedDevices list with QuarantineReason="upnpovertls" (Configuration="0", SecureRegState="0"). The app shows "Play is not registered", and setup cannot complete.

Symptoms

• The app shows "Play is not registered".

• Fix It loops: asks for a reboot, then after opening the app it asks for a reboot again. After a reset it again spends a few minutes "connecting to WiFi", then reports the speaker was set up but "might not be working properly". It stays unregistered.

• Check for updates reports no updates available, because the quarantined unit is not

part of the system.

• Rebooting and factory resetting the speaker do not help.

Reproduction

This happened with two Plays on consecutive days:

MAC

First seen on network

Resolved

Play 1

2026-09-29 20:23 CEST

2026-09-29, after several reboots and resets

Play 2

80:4A:F2:B6:68:40

2026-09-30 16:56 CEST

2026-09-30 ~20:55 CEST, with no user action

Both units fixed themselves without any deliberate step: the app suddenly offered setup plus an update, and then the update, chime pairing and button pairing all worked.

Timeline for Play 2 (from the network controller's logs)

Time (CEST)

Event

16:56–20:45

Play 2 on Wi-Fi, quarantined; only ~4.4 MB downloaded in total

20:53

The already-updated Play 1 was powered on (and the phone app was woken around the same time)

20:53–20:55

Play 2 downloaded ~200 MB (the firmware), then rebooted

20:56

Play 2 back on Wi-Fi; app offered setup and update; setup completed

It looks as if a factory-firmware unit in upnpovertls quarantine is not offered its update until something prompts the household or the app to look again.

Network (verified clean)

• The new unit was on the same SSID, subnet and L2 segment as the phone and all other Sonos

speakers: a single flat LAN with no VLANs and no client isolation.

• No firewall, content-filter, IPS or region-blocking hits for its IP.

• Stable Wi-Fi: −42 dBm, 5 GHz, Wi-Fi 6, 100% client satisfaction.

• UniFi network: UDM Pro SE with U7 Pro XGS and U6 Pro access points. SSID is WPA3-only with PMF

required, 5/6 GHz, MLO off. IGMP snooping off, multicast enhancement off, mDNS on.

• The rest of the household works normally on the same network: Arc Ultra + Sub, 4× Five, Move, Move 2.

Household diagnostics

The quarantine entry for Play 2, taken from the household's ZoneGroupState:

Hi @tty33

Welcome back to the Sonos Community!

I’m sorry to hear about the issues you had getting your two new Sonos Play devices to be added to your system!

Am I correct in understanding that you now have your two Plays working? I can see them both in the diagnostics as online, but along with many other devices, they are currently offline. The issue seems to have stemmed from the IP address lookups resolving to MAC addresses with all zeros. I recommend a full reboot of your network, and if this does not help, that you get in touch with our technical support team who will document your full network topology and work from there.

I’ve seen the “UPnP over TLS” quarantine error a long time ago, can’t recall what I did to fix it.

Looks like some part of the update process failed, leaving its firmware in an unsupported state.
