I mostly love my Sonos equipment, but what in the heck were they thinking hard wiring the USB-C cable into the Sonos Play dock? I strive for that clean look and I have 6 feet of wire to somehow hide on my countertop. If you simply allowed a USB-C to USB-C cable, I could use a much shorter cable and it would look much cleaner.
Also, slightly annoying for a premium product that it does not come with a charging block. I have a black Play and a white Play so I needed to find USB-C blocks for both of them.
But mostly, come on, give me a dock option with a removable wire!
Removable Sonos Play dock cable?
Another nice thing if we had a removable cable is that we could use a 90 degree plug and place the Play closer to the wall.
Having a removable cable would be nice. However, the trend to not provide a charging block is quite common. Apple for instance stopped providing charging blocks with their phones and personal tech (excepting PC’s) several years ago. You can choose whatever excuse (environmental or cost) you may think the manufacturers may have for doing so but the reality is they are omitting charging blocks when possible.
I like the charger being and option, there are so many possibilities getting one included is likely to include the wrong one, or an unnecessary one.
I bought a single slot brick for one Sonos, used an open slot in an existing two slot brick for another and picked up a 3 slot charger for the last plus a couple other devices. That last saved me needing a power strip for the extra outlets.
The five feet of excess cord and having to choose putting the base away from the wall or crimping the included cable, maybe leading to failure, could be easily solved. Maybe even sell the improved "Base 2" as a replacement?
+18There’s also a disadvantage to having a removable cable: the connector will be less flexible than the last end of the cable is now. So if you do not replace the connector with a 90 degree plug, you need to keep it further away from the wall as you need to now.
