My grouping no longer works when I play music via airplay and group. It seems to work fine if I play right through my songs app, but via AirPlay it maybe works for a few seconds then cuts out and doesn’t come back.

Not sure I understand 100% what you’re saying, but every time I’ve had an issue with AirPlay 2, a reboot of my Apple device, and of my router has fixed the issue. So far, I’ve not had to reboot my Sonos, but a power cycle of them shouldn’t hurt anything, either.
But I tend not to group in AirPlay 2, either. I send a single signal to one speaker in my Sonos system, to keep bandwidth to a minimum, then I use the Sonos software to distribute that to any Sonos ‘room’ I want to include.
