(Finally!) An update.

Back in February I posted here and committed to being more present and more transparent about where we're headed. Time for an update.

We’ve been working through a long list of improvements, and we're now in the final stretch of getting them ready. I know it’s been a decent interval of quiet on my end. Thanks for your patience. We've been reading the posts.

What I wanted from this work was simple: a series of enhancements that make Sonos easier to learn and easier to use. The team has spent hundreds of hours over the past year watching real customers use the Sonos app, longtime owners and brand new ones alike. We've learned a lot about what hangs people up, what's confusing when you're new to the system, and what slows you down when you're just trying to change the darn volume.

What kept showing up was this: a lot of friction came from proprietary patterns we built that made the app harder to learn and use than it needed to be. Stacks on stacks on stacks of content cards. Swipe-up gestures to switch speaker orientation. Close boxes where any other app on your phone would have a back button. Custom interface elements that never quite felt like part of iOS or Android.

Now all of that is changing. Not a new app, but a new way of navigating Sonos inside the app you already have.

It starts with a beta release this week. The new navigation already benefits from a bunch of feedback here, including the monster thread of thoughtful replies I got last time I posted. Here are some things to expect:

• Familiar Tabbed navigation. Three tabs (Home, System, Search) replacing the hidden gestures and content cards. Native on both iOS and Android.
• A totally new volume interface. A core mechanism that is easier to grab and fine tune, buttons to tap up and down if that’s your thing and a new way to synchronize a across group of rooms.
• Player sort and orientation. More control over how your players are listed and displayed.

Dozens of smaller quality-of-life fixes everywhere (swipe-to-delete in playlists, a refreshed Now Playing screen, new iPad views, and attention to detail everywhere in the app).

Here’s how this rolls out: for starters, we're not flipping a switch and pushing it to everyone at once. Beta testers are getting it this week and even then it’s something they’ll have to explicitly turn on in settings (Gear Icon > Enable Improved Navigation). After beta, when we start rolling this out to everyone, it will start as an opt-in toggle there too, so everyone can try it (or not) on their own terms. From there we’ll listen to what you have to say and iterate until it’s fully polished up.

If you'd like to give it an early try, our Beta program is expanding (sign up here). It's the best way to give it a try and send us your feedback early.

Stepping back: this is the beginning of a different way of working here at Sonos, where what gets built, and in what order, is shaped by the conversations here and with all our customers.

Thanks for the inspiration and thanks for sticking with us.

Sorry but until you support all my S1 and S2 products I am not interested.  The app can't connect to Tidal and can't connect to my NAS anymore either. My biggest gripe is that the Connect that bridges my hifi to Sonos will be useless if I switch to S2.

All I now use the S1 app for is grouping rooms.

I'm sticking to Volumio and will continue moving over to that room by room. At least that does work with all my devices as a stop gap.

Open up your ecosystem fully with proper APIs and let other vendors work with your devices properly. Stop trying to brick older devices.  Support your users properly.

When you propose conditions that were an issue 7 years ago and are now very far in the rearview, one can assume a company has already accounted for your loss a long time ago, and (rightfully so) saw it as a cost of doing business in order to advance the company.   It would be like telling McDonalds you won’t go there anymore because they cancelled the McDLT.

@Tom Conrad have you actually tried using your own product? Quality assurance in the product development for the app must be non-existent. I put out $1,600 of my hard earned cash and ended up with a system with very limited use. I have the the Ultra on my tv which works since it is directly wired to my set, but sad to say the app still sucks wind. My 2 Era 100’s that I use for streaming stereo are constantly unavailable, offline, missing, or the system is no longer available - and to top it off no amount of jiggering and resetting helps fix the issues. To make things worse, it works one day, and the next you sit down to listen to music to relax only to find some other component missing in action. I think I can help though, I don’t like to offer problems without solutions; I am a Technical Delivery Manager and customer experience guru. Let me work with your teams to put together a straight forward interface that has properly labeled features and navigation, and on the tech side I can bring concepts of built in quality and frequent updates to address the many issues you have with Wi-Fi networking and lack of proper testing leading to reduced customer satisfaction. I would also look to start an advanced beta group for pre-releasing versions just to make sure we got it right (all the cool features are less impressive if they don’t actually work). - Regards, Paul

@DesperatelySeekingFixes

Would you like to tell us about your network. Is it YOUR equipment or ISP provided.

If ISP provided

  • Is it a combo router/modem
  • Is it a main router and satellites
  • Have you added your own router (with or without satellites) connected to ISP gear

If YOUR equipment using only the ISP incoming signal (Modem or Fiber box)

  • What brand of router
  • Is it Tri-band
  • Is it a Mesh setup consisting of main router and satellites (how many)

There are other questions to be asked. However, we need the above information first. Also, it would be better to start your own thread detailing your issues along with the information requested.

Also, know that community members offering assistance are not Sonos employees; nor part of Sonos Tech Support. We are users just like you.

Looking forward to YOUR new post! 😊

What anexpensive system that fn sucks . Horrible. Waste if money. Nothing i do works.

Which product?  As an audio engineer, I find Sonos to be a top 5 sound system company.  If one considers cost, they’re easily top 3.

Hi @AjTrek1 appreciate that you are a volunteer, so my reply is focused on the general community and @Tom Conrad if he's listening, when you buy speakers to listen to music you shouldn't have to adjust your whole networking ecosystem to meet the needs of a couple of stereo speakers, and at the very least the product should come with a comprehensive guide on how to engage when the system is unstable or just plain finicky. Would you buy a self driving car that sometimes cut out if you were connecting to an incompatible satellite for communications? My question for @Tom Conrad is, wouldn't it be just plain cheaper to fix the problems than to battle legal challenges, constant customer service, and a bevy of clearly dissatisfied and disgruntled customers?

Without info about your network no one here can help.  If you actually want to solve your specific issue you need to call Sonos.  Tom Conrad is doing a great job improving Sonos reliability & usability.

It would be great if Sonos could automatically deal with every  network setup, the problem is that there are so many possibilities and they change with every update to the local networking hardware or library storage device. Making things worse much of the networking gear can't be tested in the Sonos lab, it has to be connected to it's native carrier.

A lot more information here would be a good start.

https://support.sonos.com/en-us/article/sonos-system-requirements

More user accessible internal Sonos data would help, usable error messages would be less useful but still an improvement.

If it could ever make it past the Sonos legal department (not happening) an option to download a diagnostic to a local device would open up a world of possibilities to silled users.  Also a world of hurt the first time some user posted theirs to an open forum exposing confidential user data. In the good-idea versus legal-swamp battle, well legal wins every time.

I just wonder how you guys can keep defending your pricepoint. I want it addressed.
