Question

Will a 'do-all' Bluray Unit (Magnetar UDP900 Mk2) play well with Sonos Arc Ultra / ERA 300's / Sub 4

Evening all.

Fortunate enough to install a new LG W6 Wallpaper TV and shortly be going the full Sonos Home theater solution ….. Arc Ultra / ERA 300’s & two Sub 4’s.

But a question please before mkaing the wrong moves.

I have quite a full SACD’s and indeed Audio DVD’s not to mention a mountain of DVD’s of varying qualities and a handful of Blurays and interested to get a single BR machine that can play the lot, upscale the lot and play well with and through the Sonos set up.

But I’m unsure a. if that’s possible or b. what the limitations are.

Just keen to understand what I can expect should I go with a solution such as the Magnetar UDP900 Mk2 …. or indeed if there’s another option that can be a ‘do-all’ machine at a lower price.

These are the details of the BR unit in question ….

Just noticed in posting the link that it seems Roon ready …. but no mention of Sonos.

Many thanks in advance

Sonos will not play anything except basic DTS.  Make sure you get Blu-ray player that will downrez any high definition DTS formats (DTS-HD/DTS-X) to their DTS core, or transcode them to a Dolby Digital format.

If SACD is important to you check if it will work with Sonos. See https://en.community.sonos.com/home-theater-228993/sacd-surround-is-working-6852927

While a Sonos speaker will allow you to listen to a SACD it will not preserve the Direct Stream Digital (DSD).Sonos speakers do not contain the required DAC to preserve a DSD stream. So what one hears is not the true quality that a SACD is intended to deliver. Quite frankly, I’ve always viewed SACD as a studio quality sound that may be useful for the master recording; but difficult for the human ear to actually tell the difference in the real world vs CD quality. I’m speaking to music not special EFX.

I never noticed a sound quality difference in the SACD and CD sound, my AVR connected player was easy to switch which one was being output, so comparison was easy.

What made them worth the cost to me was the positioning information, as good as any 4 track tape I had (with much higher audio quality and durability)  better sound and positioning than CD-4 records and far better than the various SQ matrix versions.

I've been chasing that sound since the early 70s, no system lasted due to many factors.

Today Sonos could offer a quad set of Era-300s set up to play Atmos and hopefully sell more speakers.

Great (if very expensive) BD-player. In my eyes it might be a bit of overkill for Sonos.
