Hi.

My current setup is now BEAM, a pair of ONE as front surrounds and have just added a pair of ONE into the ceiling as stereo pair as rear speakers.

Issue I have now is that when I use the app to control the volume I have set the balance to 60% at the front and 40% to the rear and when I use the sliders they all move proportionally. When I use the TV remove it only changes the volume at the front and the rear speaker volume on the sliders stay the same.

Also, the LH and RH rear speakers on the sliders are slight different and I cannot line them up to be the same. I have counteracted this by putting more balance to the right but should not have to.

Appreciate any assistance.

Those ‘front’ RH and LH speakers are not surrounds, nor is the Beam a ‘center’, Sonos software doesn’t allow such.

Not sure who advised you of such, it just isn’t possible in the Sonos software. 

I think you’re on the right track with the Beam up front, and the pair of Ones ‘bonded’/set up as surrounds in the back of the room. You can then use the extra speakers (a different room important the software’ as just music speakers. I have a pair of older PLAY:5 gen 2s that flank my Arc soundbar, they’re in a different ‘room’ that I use for just music. Or radio baseball playback. ;) 

Of course, you could move those extra speakers anywhere in your home…I have a pair set up in my bedroom.

Not sure I understand your setup. Sonos allows one set of ‘surrounds’, boded to the front three channels of the Beam. By definition, surrounds are intended to be behind you. So I’m not sure what you mean by ‘front surrounds’.

Any second Sonos ‘room’, bonded with a Beam receiving data from a TV set will be offset (delayed) by about 75 ms, this is the way Sonos works.

The maximum speakers that you can ‘bond’ to your Beam is two surrounds, and up to two Subs, which will all play in sync with the three front channels (right, center, left) of your Beam.

Can you clarify your setup, please?

Another pair of ONE set up as a stereo pair a the rear in the ceiling. This is what I was advised. If needed I am happy to remove the front pair as I feel the BEAM does an adequate job and then set the rear pair as surrounds.

I’m curious: have you really got them in the ceiling? I’ve never heard of anyone using them this way. How have you managed to secure them in position? Does that affect them sonically? That must make it very tricky to access the button should you ever need to reset them?

There was a thread recently (in the past 3 or 4 days) , which involved some sort of ‘in ceiling’ mount/ carrier for a One inside a ceiling. As near as I could tell from the link, it was from a DE company, and not yet available in the US. The thread was asking, it appeared, if anyone had tried them, and if they impacted the sound of a One. 

Shoot. I’ll look for it, but no promises.

If I remember correctly, there was a similar device around 5 years ago, or perhaps more. Not sure how well such a thing can work on a speaker designed for ‘the round’, but I’ve never tested one.

Thanks Bruce - and looking at the site there is a mount for the One as well. 
 

I do wonder how it sounds with the so much of the speaker in the cavity rather than in the room. ​@j_ace7: have you tested them to compare the in-ceiling as a stereo pair against a shelf-mounted stereo pair?

​@j_ace7 Does it just rest on the mount, or is it held in place? Are there any rattles or vibration?

The Sonos One sits in the mount which is like a cradle. I have not had any vibration or rattles. 

As mentioned, when I configure the equalizer correctly it actually sounds great. We had a movie night here last night and had a few comments on how great the setup sounds.

Now I just need to be able to have the volume issue with the TV remote fixed!!
