so it seems the usual issues with the app and setting up.

My system - Beam Gen1, Sub Gen 1, 2 x Play:1 (plus Move and Symfonisk in other rooms)

some background - recent lengthy power cut and restart caused home network issues and Sonos issues which i managed to resolve. (I ended up factory resetting all the Sonos units apparently not -recommended )

Purchase 2 x Era 100 to upgrade and move Play:1s to another room. Fresh out of the box I removed my Play:1 as a surround pair in the app then unplugged and kept them de-powered.

Attempt to add Era 100s - seemed to start off ok then when adding as a surround pair only one is recognised. Tried adding to another room etc.no joy ended up following the instructions in ‘Help’ to reset the beam, initially depowered for 10s then the full setup with chime/press the rear button etc.

then the Sub dropped off the network. Couldn’t rejoin it.

Started writing this topic and as I’ve just looked the Sub has turned up and looks ok and both the Era’s appear to be connected but now i have 3 x Living Rooms. The Beam was the original Living Room, when i moved the Eras from Library to Living Room they have not joined the Beam but set up their own apparently duplicate at Living Room each.

Tried again to add the Eras as a surround pair -‘There was a problem adding your surround check your network connection , etc’ Incidentally when i tried to add as  the surround pair earlier one of the Eras was added ok. Now neither

I am using a fairly recently installed Netgear Orbi wifi network which up til now has been working well with the Sonos system.  i have had one of the original Play:1s connect by cable to the Orbi base unit

any help much appreciated.

Update -

after an hour or so the beam/Sub/new Eras seem to have settled down and all showing in app.

I continue to have 2 x living room with the Era 100s in a different room to the Beam and Sub. The Eras have been set up a s a stereo pai, now i cant unpair to add them as surround pair.

How to combine the two Living Rooms or move the Eras to the correct Living Room (i mean within the app as they are located in the same physical room)

It sounds like your system is nearly back on track after all the resets—glad to hear things are showing up in the app now. To merge the duplicate Living Rooms and pair the Era 100s as surrounds, try removing the stereo pair first, then reassign each Era individually to the original Living Room before attempting surround setup again. A reboot of the app and network can also help clear up lingering sync issues.

It may help to power off everything: router/network, all Sonos speakers and your phone. Wait 5 minutes.

Then starting with the router/network, power it up and allow it to fully boot. Then power on the Beam, allowing it to fully boot, then the Sub, then the 100s. Power on your phone and connect to your system. Try adding the 100s again. Check for updates and power on the other speakers.

Thanks for the tips. I haven’t fully powered down as it all appears to be working ok. I think the biggest learning point for me is to just wait. It seems that app/speakers need some time to settle. I was expecting an ‘Apple’ out of the box it just works - seems not.

my final issue is with the old Play:1s. They are now in a different physical room. Whilst they appear on the Sonos app and can play music a desired they dont appear in the Apple AIrplay options. Apart from de-powering everything is there a fix for this? I’ll post this as a new question.

The Play 1s are not an Airplay capable speaker, so you are not able to cast to the directly. You can still Airplay to another speaker and group the Play 1s to play the same audio.

I very rarely use Airplay in my home even though I have Airplay capable speakers. I simply use music services in the Sonos app for music. This way I can start or play music in any room I want.

Ahh ok, probably explains it. So the Play:1 will never appear in Apple Music? I guess before i upgraded they were tethered to the Beam which made me think they would work alone. Just the Sonos app then to use them.

thanks Pools-3015

Correct, the PLAY:1s can never show up as a target in Apple’s AirPlay menu, since they don’t have the hardware to receive an AirPlay 2 signal. As @Pools-3015 correctly said, and as I do frequently, you can use the Sonos software to ‘group’ the PLAY:1s with an AirPlay 2 receiving speaker, and use that system. I have a Sonos One that I usually AirPlay to, and then group my PLAY:1s or PLAY:3s with it.

OK, so I can group the Play:1s with the Move which is AirPlay? Ill give that a go thanks.

That works a treat, thanks  - i missed it when Pools-3015 suggested grouping the Play:1s

thanks to both of you

Ah, yes, glad it works for you, I wasn’t paying attention to which devices you had. I often group my Roam with my PLAY:1s to get the AirPlay 2 signal there. 😉 It just depends on what is convenient.
