On some older Sonos products you can't update Wifi and they must therefore be reset.
Playbar works fine on Sonos App S2, mine did anyway :)
There are actually 2 ways to reset it, with or without an internet cable. If it won't change from orange to green, resetting it with an internet cable connected sometimes helps.
Note that it can take up to 10 minutes before it flashes green.
You ONLY have to hold the play/pause button down when you connect power.
Hold the button down while it starts flashing white, when it changes to flashing orange (1-3min) you can release the button. It should flash green after some time (1-10min).
Thanks—10 minutes seems long but I’ll give this a shot next time I’m over.

It's also ridiculously long, experienced it with a Play 1. Couldn't get it to go from blinking orange to blinking green.
Plugged in an internet cable and tried again, didn't work, just blinked orange. Gave up and let it stand and blink orange and suddenly after about 10min it blinked green..
Wait, what? As far as I’m aware, all Sonos products can have their WiFi updated, they just need to be communicated with. Most easily done by wiring them to the new router with an Ethernet cable, but you could ‘tell’ them the new SSID and password before disconnecting the old internet connection, too. Or, more easily, just set the ‘new’ SSID and password to be the same as the old one.
Resets can take longer these days, especially on older devices, the older CPUs just aren’t as fast in processing power as the newer CPUs, and the firmware continues to increase in size over time.

Connect Sonos to a new router or WiFi network
The need to reset to update WiFi details is only on S2, not on S1.
If your in laws are happy with it, I’d stay on S1 for the time being if that’s still possible. I’ve read about Playbar WiFi/network cards becoming faulty after years of use, so this could be that.
It says :
’…and you can’t wire a product to your router, you’ll need to reset each product and set them up again as a new system.’
What am I missing, specifically?

It seems you are one of those people who comments for the sake of commenting, a wordsmith. You have to go into detail just to make a comment and if there is a small chance you can find a different approach then you are there.
