TV Stereo Sound via Beam to Move Pair – Is It Possible?

Hi sonos fam,

I have a Sony TV with an HDMI ARC output and two Sonos Move speakers (original model) set up as a stereo pair. 

I'm interested in expanding this setup by adding a Sonos Beam Gen 2 and a Sub Gen 3 subwoofer. My plan is to connect the Beam Gen 2 to the HDMI ARC on my Sony TV.

Would I be able to play the TV sound through the Beam Gen 2 in stereo mode and extend that stereo sound to the Sonos Move stereo pair? Additionally, would the Sub Gen 3 function correctly within this setup?

This definitely is possible, but it’s not really recommended. Grouping additional speakers with home theater setups isn’t supported as home theater audio is generally uncompressed and has little buffer. Grouping additional speakers when playing home theater audio may result in audio drops or delays.

That is to say, it’s an unsupported setup but there’s nothing preventing you from grouping the two Moves with the Beam and Sub in the Sonos app. If you group the Move stereo pair with the Beam, they’ll play the same audio as the Beam as well as the low frequencies, as the Sub would only handle the Beams low frequencies.

Thanks for the quick response!

I realize now that I might not have expressed myself quite clearly.
The goal here isn’t to group additional speakers in a traditional home theater setup. Instead, I’d like to play TV audio through the Beam Gen 2, which will be connected to the TV via HDMI ARC, allowing the Beam to handle the sound from the TV directly.
I understand everything up to this point.

My main question is:
Will the stereo sound from the TV also play through my two existing Move speakers (in stereo), and will the Sub Gen 3 reproduce the low frequencies from that same TV audio source?

Additionally,
if I want to play only music, would it be possible to pair the two Move speakers with the Sub Gen 3 for this purpose?

Yes, although there will be a 75ms delay between the Beam and any ‘grouped’ Sonos room, for TV input only. When streaming music (not using the TV input), they would all be in sync.

If memory serves, you can’t ‘bond’ a sub with portable speakers, such as the Move or Roam.
