So, for the past 3/4 years. I have had the ARC and sub working flawlessly with my older non-4k Samsung TV. It had a Direct TV Stream box and Apple TV. Here is how it was connected:

ARC to TV-  HDMI to optical out using the Sonos dongle

Direct TV Stream to TV-  HDMI

Apple TV to TV-   HDMI

Volume was controlled with either remote(Direct TV or Apple TV remotes) and you would see the ARC respond to any volume changes via the lights on the front of the ARC. The TV would show that it was using external speakers.OK, everything worked great. Now here comes the issue.

I get a new Sony Bravia 4k TV and did a basic swap. The only thing I changed during the swap was I removed the HDMI to Optical dongle and went straight to the HDMI/ARC port on the TV. Now it nothing comes out of the ARC. I even swapped tt with a newer ARC just in case it was stuck on the old settings but it still didnt work. Here is my setup:

TV:   Sony Bravia XR-77A80K

Apple TV hardware:

What am I missing to make this work? On a side note, I’m a lifelong IT guys who has setup a ton of these for friends and family and I feel some legit shame having to ask for assistance. But, here I am.

Any ideas?

Why have you not turned on any of the supported formats in the Advanced Sound Settings? They are all toggled off.

Or am I missing something?

Have you configured the audio settings on the TV to use the eARC output?

ok….Just when I thought I had put enough info in the post, I failed. 🙂 I had these set yesterday. Here are my settings on the TV:

My question still remains though.

Shoot, should I turn them all on? I feel pretty dumb asking, but I don’t recall any of these settungs from previous setups.

Yes. I’m honestly surprised that turning on eARC mode doesn’t do that automatically. An odd thing for Sony to have you handle separately. Makes me think there’s something odd going on with your Sony. Have you rebooted the TV’s OS by unplugging it from the wall for two minutes?

Well, problem solved. I failed to secure the hdmi cable properly to the ARC itself. I feel shame. Thanks everyone for the replies. Sorry to waste people’s time.
