Just learned about setting up a surround sound system in my basement. I have an arc ultra at the tv, 2 era300s front L&R of TV, sub gen4, and amp with 2 sonance celling speakers as R&L rear surrounds is there a better configuration to take full advantage of Dolby atmos or surround sound setup in general?

You could use the Era’s as the rear surrounds as they have up-firing speakers. A great thing with Sonos is the ability to configure and then reconfigure setups. Try with the ceiling speakers as surrounds, and then with the Eras. Stick with the setup you prefer.

The correct setup using the components you list is:

  • Arc Ultra connected to HDMI eARC port of TV
  • Sub 4 Bonded to Arc Ultra
  • Era 300’s Bonded to Arc Ultra as surrounds setup in the rear Or
  • Sonos Amp with Sonance in-celinig speakers Bonded to Arc Ultra as surrounds in the Rear

The setup you have is not officially supported by Sonos.

It only works if the Era 300’s are setup as a separate room for Music which they can be L/R of TV. However, sending TV audio to them will result in a 75ms delay creating an echo effect.

When comparing the ceiling speakers and 300s as surrounds make sure you pick a movie that has a lot of Atmos height sound.
