Sony A95K + Sonos Arc = Audio system failure

It’s frustrating. Sony keeps telling me to be patient but can’t give any timeline or even promise the problem will be fixed again. They just tell me to update when there’s an update an hope for it to be fixed. I’m baffled they somehow introduced a problem that is ruining the experience and can’t promise they’re going to fix said problem.

Sony's update problem is getting more common, my solar controller app updated in May and is now shown as "no longer supported" by a large portion of the Android devices out there. Five updates so far trying to recover, and zero progress. It is killing new sales when they have to admit to selling an Apple or web-browser only based system with no Android access.

Look at the mess Sonos is in since they tried the major app update, very similar disaster.

There is something very wrong in the development environment that is biting far too many folks.

My only advice** is to turn off ALL auto updates and give any new stuff a month or so of widespread public usage before risking it yourself.

** Not taking that on Sonos here, but I have a backup in place if it goes tits up. Everything else that doesn't offer a bulletproof rollback option is on the wait and see plan.

I have 3 Sony TV’s and learned a long time ago not to do the updates. If it’s working  let it continue like it is. Oh…I don’t update the Sonos app either because I don’t use it. I use the  SonoPhone and the Clic app  to control my 14 Sonos speakers..works excellent. So no updates there either.

Since an update on my Sony A90J, it’s juste impossbile to use my Sonos Arc Ultra….

The following can be helpful with SAMSUNG TV’s, I don’t know about the success rate with respect to SONY TV’s:

Unplug all HDMI cables and power down both units. Wait at least two minutes, power up both units and allow them to fully reboot. Make sure that BRAVIA™ Sync or BRAVIA Link is enabled on the TV. Next, connect the HDMI cable between SONOS and the TV then allow them a minute or two to exchange details. While I don’t know if this always resolves the SAMSUNG-SONOS issue, the success rate is high.

Try this before attaching any additional devices to the TV.

I get the message every time I turn on my tv and at least half the time it says switching to tv speakers and I have to off/on or manually switch the tv to audio system.  Really getting old.  Wish I never updated.

Are any other devices connected to the TV? Regardless, this is probably a CEC (Consumer Electronic Control) issue. CEC commands travel over the HDMI cables and are sent to all connected devices. The goal is to allow the operator to simply drop a disc into a player and all necessary devices will power up and select inputs. Volume and other commands can also be accommodated. Unfortunately, standards, if any, are very lax and a device might assume that it is the master. One of my favorite little glitches is the cable box update in the middle of the night. At the end of the update the cable box issues a CEC power up command — supposedly as a convenience for the user. In the bedroom this is not welcome as the system starts blasting TV.

Inserting a CEC blocker in the HDMI cable to a rogue device, while blocking some automation, can tame the rogue. In the case of SONOS this may block Volume commands, but most device remotes can issue IR Volume commands that SONOS soundbars can be trained to accept.

With my Sony and Arc Ultra I had to start with the TV settings, then rerun the Sonos app settings to get the swapping to go away.

I’ve already tried that. No difference. 

I’m having same issues,  so annoying.  When I sync it, it connects for a second then stops.  

Has anyone found a fix for this?  Well more than half the time when powering on my tv I have to manually change audio from tv to audio system.  I don’t know if a Sonos update or Sony update broke it but I’d sure like it fixed.

What did Sonos Support say, when you called in to discuss it?
