We have recently bought a new Samsung tv. It does not have digital optical so we purchased an hdmi to optical converter from sonos. However after plugging this into hdmi arc slot on tv and connecting to optical port on playbar, it still does not recognise the playbar. Any ideas on what we can do?

Sorry to hear you’re having issues connecting your Playbar to your new TV.
The Sonos Optical Audio Adaptor is used to connect a Sonos HDMI device to an optical source and not the other way around. This adaptor is compatible with the Arc, Arc Ultra, Amp, and Beam as they can provide a HDMI connection.
What you want instead is the reverse, a HDMI in to Optical out. I can’t make an official recommendations but you should be able to find this online, or other community users may have some recommendations for you.

Either should work. You aren’t using this to transmit video, so the video quality isn’t relevant. You just need it to covert an Arc audio signal to optical with 5.1, and both of these seem to have that capability.

Thanks for the answers. While the use of the HDMI in to Optical out now shows the Sonos Playbar finding the TV (it shows up as the output on the Sonos app now), there is still no sound coming out as the TV can’t seem to locate it. Is there a particular setting in Sonos or on the TV that I am missing??

I wouldn't have thought about it either. At least it has eARC so maybe you should look at the Arc Ultra :) Otherwise everyone is selling their Arc cheaply since they bought Ultra.
Here you get an Arc thrown in your head for about 3000kr and you can get about 1500kr for a Playbar so before you spend a lot of time and money to make it work, upgrade.. An early Christmas present to yourself :)
I also just bought Samsung TV that does not have optical output. I bought converter box that goes from HDMI in to optical out and Sonos Playbar still will not work. Has anyone had luck with a particular converter box. This is the link to the one I bought https://a.co/d/9lxBTEx
