I know this has been asked before but all of the threads seem rather old. I have an opportunity to buy two play:3’s from a friend. Will these still work with the S2 app and be able to connect with the Beam as surround speaker? Appreciate the response.

Yes, the Play:3s are compatible with the S2 app and can be used as surrounds with the Beam.
