Sonos is missing one obvious product – a real 5.1 Amp

Hi

I keep looking at Sonos home theatre solutions, but there is one thing stopping me.

I already have a traditional Yamaha 5.1 setup with five perfectly good speakers and a sub. I don't want to throw all of that away and spend €4–5,000 on a complete Sonos setup just to get into the Sonos ecosystem.

What I would buy, however, is a proper Sonos 5.1 amplifier.

Something simple:

125W – Left
125W – Center
125W – Right
50W – Surround Left
50W – Surround Right
+ Sub output / Sonos Sub support

HDMI eARC, Trueplay and normal Sonos integration. That's basically it.

The current solution with two Sonos Amps feels a bit overkill. You get 2 x 125W for the front speakers and another 2 x 125W for the surrounds, but still no real center channel.

I really don't need 125W per surround speaker. I do want a proper center.

Put a product like this in the €1–1,500 range and I would seriously consider buying it tomorrow. I can keep the speakers I already like, replace my old receiver and suddenly the whole system becomes part of Sonos.

And after receiving the email saying:

"Maybe behind your couch. Maybe under your TV..."

...I couldn't help thinking: please tell me you are finally building something like this. 🙂

    There’s lots a of manufacturers already doing surround receivers, some are even “Works with Sonos” certified. Combine any one of those with a Sonos Port and you’ve got what you want. I do not see a USP for Sonos doing this - though it is up to them of colours and you are totally free to think otherwise,

    I understand the workaround.
    My point is that I don't want to add Sonos to an AV receiver, I want Sonos to replace the AV receiver.
    One box, one system, one volume control, while keeping my existing 5.1 speakers.

    I’m not sure what the market is for a fully wired “wireless” speaker system.  Most people who buy into Sonos do it for whole house audio that doesn’t require extensive renovations.  The Amp’s ability to do HDMI-ARC input is an outlier of that market, so I’m not sure what the popularity would be of another even more specialty amplifier would be, just to replace current systems of wired speakers with more wired speakers.  But who knows?  You may be onto something here.
