Question

Sonos Beam not detected by Sony TV on power up

I have a Beam Gen 2 connected to a Sony BRAVIA XR-48A90K. About 90% of the time when I turn the TV on it does not detect the Beam and reverts back to the built-in speakers. If I go into the TV settings and change the output to Audio System it starts working. Is there something I can do so the TV reliably detects the Beam when I turn it on?

Sounds (if you’ll forgive the pun) like there is a CEC issue somewhere, with either the TV’s CEC computer not recognizing the signal from the Beam, or the Beam not always sending the CEC recognition signal properly.

I would check both the TV and your Sonos controller for any updates, and apply them. After that, I would unplug both from the wall for two minutes. Then plug in the TV first, wait two more minutes, then plug in the Sonos.

If the problem continues, I would recommend that you submit a system diagnostic within 10 minutes of reproducing the issue, and call Sonos Support to discuss it. Don’t post the resulting diagnostic number here.

There may be information included in the diagnostic that will help Sonos pinpoint the issue and help you find a solution.

When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.

Check the HDMI-ARC connection first. Make sure Bravia Sync/CEC and eARC are enabled on the TV, then try a different HDMI cable and reboot both devices completely. If manually selecting “Audio System” fixes it every time, the issue is must be of TV and beam failing their HDMI-CEC handshake during startup.

Try resetting the CEC chain...

Unplug the TV, the Beam 2, and every source device from wall power. Wait at least 1 minute. Plug the TV back in first, wait for it to fully boot, then plug in the Beam 2, wait. Then plug in source devices one by one. Wait for each to fully boot.

I have an A80J and Beam 2. Every once in a while, the TV stops sending audio to the Beam. Not very often. But when it happens, the only way to recover is to unplug (or reboot) the TV. It doesn’t sound like exactly the same problem you’re having. Just thought I’d throw that out there.

One last suggestion…

Make sure the Beam 2 is connected via HDMI cable to the TV’s eARC HDMI port and not a standard HDMI.

Also…is there an AppleTV, gaming console or other HDMI device connected to the TV? If so, as suggested unplug all devices including the Beam 2 and TV. After correctly connecting the Beam2 via eARC HDMI power on the TV and confirm that it and the Beam2 are communicating properly. You might power the TV on/off a few times to make sure it and the Beam2 are in sync. If all good reconnect the other HDMI devices. Then test the on/off process between the TV and Beam2.

Let us know the outcome.
