Sonos Beam: make default for TV

I have a Beam connected to my Apple TV with ARC. The Apple TV is connected to the router via ethernet. It plays on my LG TV.

I set the Beam to be the default audio output but it keeps changing back to the TV speakers. It changes when I turn the TV off and on and sometimes it changes when I choose a different channel. Quite annoying. Any ideas?

Is the Beam hdmi lead definitely in the ARc or eARC input, if it’s not on settings it’s automatically set on when connecting to the ARC input.
Otherwise id trawl though all the settings menu, or maybe contact LG.

Not sure I understand your set up. Should the Apple TV not be connected to the TV, that would be connected to the Beam? The Apple TV does not do ARC, if I’m well informed?

To further define this, the Apple TV should not be plugged in to an ARC port on the TV, the Sonos Beam should be. Whatever the TV’s manufacturer calls it, CEC should be turned on, so the TV recognizes the Beam is connected.

ARC is created by the TV, and sent to the Beam via CEC / HDMI-ARC, based on input from any of the other HDMI ports. The Apple TV doesn’t create the ARC signal, it is created by the TV set.

Sorry. It’s

 Beam to TV via ARC

 AppleTV to TV via HDMI1

 AppleTV to router via ethernet.

any ideas what I should do to solve the problem? ( making beam the default audio output)

in AppleTV Settings I go to video and audio, audio output. I cannot change the default output, only the temporary audio output. I keeps changing back to the tv speakers

thanks in advance

You may need to talk to Apple. On my Apple TV, the audio output never changes.

The Apple TV shouldn’t be using  AirPlay 2 or Bluetooth to connect to the Beam, it should always be sending the signal via HDMI to the TV set. The TV set should then be converting that signal to an ARC signal using the built in CEC system, and sending that signal via HDMI-ARC to your Beam.

I’d double check that your TV’s software is up to date, in fact on all three devices, the TV, the Apple TV (updates were released yesterday) and the Sonos (updates released today).  Also, make sure all HDMI cables are plugged in properly, on all three devices. It’s always worth reseating an HDMI cable.

In the melee that is LG settings

To enable CEC mode on an LG TV, you can do the following:

  1. Turn on the TV
  2. Press the Settings button on the remote
  3. Select All Settings
  4. Select General
  5. Select Devices
  6. Select HDMI Settings
  7. Select Simplink (HDMI-CEC)
  8. Select On

from google

Yes, it is a melee.

On LG TV settings general I didn’t get Devices nor could I find it under other headings.

Any clues? Thanks

It’s weird that sometimes it’s Audio and sometimes Beam. Trying to work out what determines it.
