Sonos Arc Ultra + Sub Gen 4 – Severe HDMI eARC Sound Issues with Hisense and LG TVs

Hi everyone,

I purchased a Sonos Arc Ultra and Sub (Gen 4) last month and initially connected them to our one-year-old Hisense 55U7NQTUK TV.

My current setup:

- Soundbar: Sonos Arc Ultra

- Subwoofer: Sonos Sub (Gen 4), connected wirelessly to the Arc Ultra

- Original TV: Hisense 55U7NQTUK

- New TV: LG QNED86B (purchased on 10th October)

- HDMI connection: Sonos Arc Ultra connected directly to the LG TV's HDMI eARC port using the original HDMI cable supplied by Sonos

- Audio connection: HDMI eARC, with no additional devices or adapters between the soundbar and TV

With the Hisense TV, I experienced two frustrating issues. Firstly, the sound would randomly cut out completely while watching TV, forcing me to switch the audio output to the TV speakers and then back to Sonos to restore the sound. Secondly, whenever I switched the TV on, the volume would occasionally jump to full blast.

After researching the issue online, I discovered that it could be related to an HDMI eARC/CEC handshake problem between the TV and the Sonos system.

Hoping to resolve this, I purchased a brand-new LG QNED86B on the 10th of October. Unfortunately, the situation has become even worse, and I can now barely use my Sonos system to watch TV at all.

It's incredibly frustrating, especially considering the significant investment in the Sonos Arc Ultra, Sub (Gen 4), and now a brand-new television purchased specifically in the hope of fixing this issue.

Has anyone experienced similar problems with the Sonos Arc Ultra, particularly when connected to an LG TV? Could this be an HDMI eARC, HDMI-CEC (Simplink), firmware, or Sonos compatibility issue?

I'd really appreciate any advice, troubleshooting suggestions, or a permanent solution, as I simply want to enjoy my Sonos system without constantly dealing with these problems.

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Hey everyone,

I wanted to jump back on here and give a massive thank you to everyone who jumped in to help me troubleshoot the issue with my brand-new setup.

For context, my LG 55QNED86B (bought Oct 10th) and my Sonos Arc Ultra (bought last month) were locked in a brutal loop where the volume would automatically force itself down to zero every 10 seconds. Even if I manually turned it back up, it would cut right back down to zero. It made watching normal TV, Netflix, and Prime completely impossible.

Thanks to the advice here, I finally got it sorted! If anyone else runs into this nightmare with a brand-new setup, here is exactly what fixed it for me:

  • The System Updates: Because both pieces of kit are brand new, the firmware versions were completely out of sync out of the box. I forced a fresh update through both the Sonos app and the Fire Stick, alongside a webOS system update on the LG TV to get all their communication channels aligned.
  • Changed Fire Stick Format: I went into the Fire Stick's internal display and sound settings and locked the audio output format down to Dolby Digital rather than leaving it on an unrestricted auto setting.
  • Disabled TV AI & Energy Settings: I went into the LG settings and turned off "Energy Saving Step" (which was aggressively throttling power to the HDMI ports). I also disabled "AI Sound Pro" and "AI Acoustic Tuning" so the TV stopped fighting the Arc Ultra's native audio processing.
  • The "Ghost Signal" Check: I completely removed the batteries from my remotes to ensure a stuck IR button wasn't spamming a volume-down loop, and checked for any unpeeled protective factory plastic film near the TV's IR receiver.

The audio is now perfectly stable, holding its volume, and sounding absolutely incredible. I was even looking into buying a hardware middleman like the HDFury Arcana, but thanks to your guidance, I realized my TV's native eARC port handles everything perfectly once the software bugs are squashed.

Cheers again for the brilliant support—much appreciated!

Sounds like AI is already taking over.  Does the Sonos setting “TV Setup” address these LG-Sonos settings either automatically or with information about suggested settings.  I guess that would probably be impractical.

Sonos as far as I know is not concerned with TV compatibility other than HDMI ARC/eARC cable specifications. CEC integration is still generic as there is no official standard. Given all the different variables TV manufacturers implement with their individual setups; LG’s AI as a prime example, IMO Sonos trying to accommodate them would be a rabbit hole with no escape. 😂

That said Sonos is not unlike any generic soundbar that is not part of the TV manufacturers brand. However Sonos does implement compatibility learning settings for the TV’s remote. Soundbars bearing the TV branding in my experience do have settings configured for the TV going so far as to have on screen menus for setup and adjustments.
