I wish to use a Sonos Ray simply as an external speaker for a TV via the optical input.  I have only a public network available and can connect my windows 10 PC to the Sonos device as it is listed in the available network devices.  My Norton smart firewall is disabled

The Sonos app cannot connect to the Ray and I get the “Try Again” message.

Suggestions are welcome and have considered that this unit is not appropriate for this situation.  It must tolerate occasional loss of power without any computer intervention to recover.

I did change the TV to send audio to the optical output but the Sonos does not decode it in the absence of the setup process.

Wouldn’t the answer be to perhaps setup the speaker elsewhere with another TV/Private network …and when done move it back to the TV and see if then works. If so, then add the TV remote IR codes to the Ray and just use it for TV audio only. Other option would be to use a travel router that can connect to the public network WiFi. That way streaming music audio can be used too.

When I travel, I mostly use a WiFi-6 MiFi router device with a 5G LTE connection for my Sonos devices, which works fine in most areas around the UK. See link:

Note though that in all cases a smartphone/tablet is required for device setup as mentioned in this link…

That is a very common question, answered in the support faq and in the forums multiple times so a lot of folks probably passed on answering it one more time.

I didn’t see it, or I’d have done my usual.

Sonos doesn’t work on most public networks, usually due to client isolation.

Even if it did everyone on the public network would be able to control your Sonos.
